This is because EPA SW-846Method 8321A Modified provides greater method sensitivity and minimizes the possibility offalse positives. The table below summarizes perchlorate results reported by both EPA Method314.0 and SW-846 Method 8321A Modified, and Westons calculated relative percent difference(RPD) values. None of the perchlorate concentrations detected in samples collected during thePA/SI from within and surrounding Boardman AFR exceed the DoD action level for perchlorateof 24 g/L or the ecological screening values of 35,000 g/L (LANL, 2005) and 9,300 g/L(Dean et al., 2004).Additional groundwater and surface water sampling has been completed in the lower UmatillaBasin by the EPA, ODEQ, and the Navy confirming the presence of perchlorate in groundwaterand surface water throughout the Lower Umatilla Basin, within which the former BoardmanAFR FUDS resides (ODEQ, 2005). Locations with perchlorate detections occur both cross (upto tens of miles) and down gradient of the former Boardman AFR. The source or sources of theperchlorate have not been identified and the ODEQ and EPA are continuing investigations ofperchlorate impacts in the Lower Umatilla Basin.2.6 Other Land Uses that May Have Contributed to ContaminationAgricultural use of pesticides and herbicides could have also contributed to media contaminationin particular relative to perchlorate. Perchlorate containing compounds have been documented inhistorical uses of fertilizers and herbicides. In addition, arid climate soils have been found tocontain naturally occurring perchlorate (ITRC, 2005)2.7 Past Regulatory ActivitiesThere have been no regulatory actions with respect to MEC or MC reported for the site.2.8 Previous MEC FindsMEC finds, cited in the 1997 Boardman ASR and other more recent finds, are listed on Table 2-4and shown on Figure 2-10.
