Recently, Mr. Ry‰sakuTsunoda, a lecturer on the history of Japanese religion atColumbia University, came to Japan. Mr. Tsunoda has a deepinterest in Zen and has already translated D‡genÕs Sh‡b‡genz‡Zuimonki into English. A large part of the Zuimonki has alreadybeen translated into German by Mr. Hidemasa Iwamoto. Thepublication of articles on Buddhism in Life and Time magazineshas aroused considerable interest throughout the world. In theFebruary l4th issue of Time, an article about Dr. Jung ofSwitzerland drew much attention. Dr. Jung, a world-famouspsychoanalyst, has a deep understanding of Zen. He wrote anintroduction to the German edition of Dr. SuzukiÕs Introductionto Zen Buddhism. Dr. Jung, dissatisfied with FreudÕs psychoanalysiswhich sees sex at the root of all problems, struck out anew departure in psychology. He divides the mind intoconsciousness and unconsciousness and the latter further intoindividual and collective unconsciousness. Collective unconsciousnessexists on three levels: firstly, for man it is ÒAnimaÓand woman ÒAnimus;Ó secondly, for man Òthe old wise man,Ófor woman Òthe earth mother;Ó and thirdly, for man and womanalike there is Self. This Self transcends the individual. In Zenthis is called oneÕs Original Face or the Old Master Within theHouse (J. Okuri no Shujin-‡) and indicates the Buddha Naturein people.
