ABOUT THE ORDER OFBUDDHIST CONTEMPLATIVESThe Order of Buddhist Contemplatives is a religious order practicingSerene Reflection Meditation (J. S‡t‡ Zen) as transmittedfrom the Very Reverend Keid‡ Chisan Koh‡ Zenji, Abbot ofDaihonzan S‡ji-ji in Yokohama Japan, to Reverend MasterP.T.N.H. Jiyu-Kennett. Rev. Master Jiyu-Kennett came to theUnited States in 1969 and established <strong>Shasta</strong> <strong>Abbey</strong> in 1970. Shefounded the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives in 1978, serving asHead of the Order until her death in 1996. In North America, theOrder now has Priories (congregational temples) in Albany andMaricopa, California; Eugene and Portland, Oregon; McKennaand Seattle, Washington; and Edmonton, Alberta and Vancouver,B.C., Canada. In Europe, Throssel Hole Buddhist <strong>Abbey</strong> in northernEngland was founded in 1972, and O.B.C. Priories are locatedin Edinburgh, Scotland, and Reading and Telford, England. Thereare also meditation groups affiliated with the Order in GreatBritain, Canada, the United States, the Netherlands, and Germany.The Order has male and female monks; women and men haveequal status and recognition and train together in the Buddhistpriesthood; they are referred to as both monks and priests.The monastic order is celibate and vegetarian.
