Appendix II: Correspondence 149The fifth document is an edited version of a letter in Englishwhich includes a translation of Koh‡ ZenjiÕs letter of invitationto Miss Kennett and the accompanying letter of guarantee forher care during her first year of training at S‡ji-ji. The originalof the translation was rather badly marked up in the process oftranslating it from Japanese and this transcription has beendone to facilitate it being read. The translator may not havebeen too fluent in English, but the information is clear:Dear Peggy,I am so pleased to have letters in reply to yours, which I sentthe other day, enclosed with a guarantee for your stay inJapan for one year.A paper that I marked B is the guarantee you want. Itis stated that the Abbot will take all responsibility as aguarantor for any expenses and other things you require tostay in the S‡ji Temple for one year to come, signed in hisname and dated 21st July 1961.Another one marked A is his letter to you dated 21stJuly in the morning of the day, which gist is as follows:“Thank you for your letter of 7th July. I am pleased tohear that you are keeping well off and you are endeavouringto make good progress of your study of Buddhism since lastwinter.
