What is the Role of Sōtō Zen Practice? 137tradition, and this kind of living not only produces a feeling ofdeep friendship, but also a sense of collective responsibilitygradually develops.5) The serene reflection practice does not go to the extremeof materialism or idealism. It firmly holds that mind andmatter are inseparable. Avoiding the extreme viewpoint ofeither materialism or idealism, Zen finds a middle path. Mindand matter are but two sides of reality, and to attempt to separatethem and cling to either leads to dualism which Buddhismrejects.6) The meditation practice adapts itself to the individualityand capacity of each person. It is, therefore, able to guideone correctly to a deep understanding of oneÕs Real Nature. It iscapable of producing disciples who receive the Transmissionfrom a true master and who can exceed their masters. A truemaster reveals his individuality and brings it to bear as a vitalforce not only in the period in which he lives but also insucceeding ages.7) The practice of serene reflection meditation has penetrateddeeply into the lives of the common people where it hasnourished the spirit which holds the way to enlightenmentfor ordinary people.
