What lab test method and limits are used to measure the storage stability anddegradation of PMB’s?TG1 specifies a 3 day storage stability test according to method MB – 6. The test requires that thePMB is stored in a glass tube at 160°C and the softening point is determined on the bottom andtop third of the sample. The specification allows a maximum difference of 5°C in line with CENrequirements for this test.TG1 also has a RTFOT requirement for monitoring change in the softening point before and aftertreatment of -2 and +8°C. This limit tends to cause problems for SBS modified binders as thesoftening points fluctuate over time for a given batch of binderV4-2 Page 60

Are high modulus asphalt technologies available? What lessons have been learnt in theacquisition of the necessary materials and skills to deliver the asphalt? Will the materialbe subjected to APT and is it likely to be included in the SA Pavement Design Method?The CSIR has successfully facilitated the transfer for the implementation of EME (French term forhigh modulus asphalt otherwise known as HiMA) technology from France using local materials.The first project using HiMA was placed while the study tour was in Durban at the entrance of thePort. The target is to design a mix with a high binder content of 6% which has a modulus of 14MPa @ 15°C and does not crack. The key to HiMA is procuring a hard bitumen with a lowpenetration range of 10 – 20 dmm. This binder is available from both the refineries in Durban. Theintention is to use HiMA to either increase the pavement design life or reduce the layer thicknessof a full depth asphalt pavement by up to 30%. The current flexible pavement design life in RSA isonly 25 years.Q 2. Is binder sampled at point of use for quality assessment? If so how, and what tests areundertaken?Binder samples are taken at during the supply chain and at the point of use for all large projectsand tested on a frequency basis. Large spray seal and mobile asphalt contracts perform most ofthe tests on-site. TG1 provides details of the testing frequency required at point of delivery formodified binders.V4-2 Page 61
