Dangerous cargoHazard descriptionIATA lists a vast number of “Dangerous goods” towhich restrictions apply.Typical Dangerous goods encountered in landGeophysical operations:Suggested controlsFollow IATA regulationsTrainingLoad masters at heliports and inside aircraftCorrect packaging.Explosives:1. premature detonation, especially ifdetonators close to high explosives.2. Detonators may be triggered by radio waves,electrical fields, static electricity.3. Loss of external load of explosiveso risk to 3 rd partieso risk to reputationo material must be recovered and thiscan be difficult.BatteriesSmall petrol engines:These often have fixed petrol tank attached to them,which may contain sufficient petrol to cause risk.Cement:Cement dust can cause serious and acute damage toengine and moving partsRaw meat and fishRaw meat produced blood, which is a corrosivesubstance that can damage the aircraft andcontaminate other cargoFuelsSelect suitable products (non mass detonatingdetonators, shock proof high explosives etc.)1. Carry separately2. Detonators inside closed Faraday cages.Avoid imposing radio silence!Avoid static build up through:detonators as internal cargo ortransport in metal baskets etc.3. If transported over water or tidal swamps,consider non floating explosives, which willbe easier to recover and will not spread in anuncontrolled manner.
