6 CHAPTER 1. INTRODUCTIONcontextual task to be executed by the user, where we have access to relevant informationabout the evolution of the task. The purpose is to classify this information in a two foldperspective: (1) extract information related to the identity of the user; and (2) extractinformation related to the user’s affective/cognitive state (see figure 1.4). This defines thebroad scenario and overall aims of the study where this thesis is integrated. The present thesis sets this research context basis, solving some of the problems andcreating a ground for further research questions undertaken by other researchers in ourgroup. The thesis focuses on behavioral biometric classification based on a set of theelectrophysiological signals and pointer dynamics.Figure 1.4: Research context.1.3 ContributionsThe contributions presented in this thesis address the topic of behavioral biometrics, introducingnew signal sources, novel signal models, and advanced classification strategies in amultidisciplinary approach. The new signals modalities were collected in a signal acquisition project, where a wellestablished setup was prepared by developing new signal acquisition tools. In particular,we collected HCI signals from the mouse movement using a new remote acquisition systemdeveloped in the context of the present thesis. The ECG and EDA were collected astwo signal sources, in this case electrophysiological signals, for exploring their relation tothe subject identity. Other signals were acquired in order to create an extended research
