21searched <strong>the</strong> area thoroughly, collecting all carcasses encountered <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> recording all markedcarcasses, until <strong>the</strong>y felt <strong>the</strong> area was completely covered. The trial was repeated <strong>on</strong> 28 August using <strong>the</strong> same study area. Procedures were identical tothose used 10 days previously, except different coloured leg b<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>s were used to mark <strong>the</strong>carcasses. Also, an additi<strong>on</strong>al six carcasses were collected <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> b<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed from outside <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> studyarea, to bring <strong>the</strong> total number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> marked birds distributed within <strong>the</strong> study area to 30.RESULTSEvaluati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> routine clean-upThe surface area covered by open water, light, medium, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> heavy vegetati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> each <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong>research lakes is shown in Figure 1. The area <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> lakes <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> area <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> vegetati<strong>on</strong> arepresented in Table 2. The proporti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> marked carcasses found by clean-up crews duringbotulism outbreaks <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> eight research lakes ranged from 7-45% (Table 2). Only 7% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>marked carcasses were found <strong>on</strong> Whitewater Lake (7,850 ha), whereas 28-45% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> markedcarcasses were found <strong>on</strong> lakes that were 250-550 ha in area. Kimiwan <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pakowki lakes, whichwere also large lakes, had pickup rates <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 32 <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> 28%, respectively. However, <strong>the</strong> proporti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>the</strong>se lakes that was heavily vegetated, which is where most <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> carcasses were found <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>where most <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> clean-up effort was c<strong>on</strong>centrated, was much smaller than <strong>the</strong> total area <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong>lake (Figure 3). The average cost per ha <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> four small lakes was ~C$123 (Table 1). OnWhitewater Lake, <strong>the</strong> cost per ha was ~C$11 in 1998 <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> clean-up rate remained at 7% in1999, despite an increased clean-up effort <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> a 40% increase in costs. The fates <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> radio-marked carcasses <strong>on</strong> three lakes with clean-up <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> four lakes without clean-upare presented in Table 3. Scavengers removed 7% <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> 5% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> marked carcasses <strong>on</strong> Paysen Lakein 2000 <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2001, respectively. Although scavengers removed <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> two radio-markedcarcasses <strong>on</strong> Chaplin Lake, scavenging rate could not be determined at that site because <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> lowsample size. No radio-marked carcasses were removed by scavengers <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> remaining fourlakes. Overall,
