Whileat Davidson, she tutored elementaryschool children, served as an officerof Connor Eating House and playedvarsity soccer for four years. Duringher senior year she captained the soccersquad and was named team MVP. Shealso spent one semester traveling andstudying in New Zealand.Upon graduating from Davidson,Penn joined the faculty of BlairAcademy in New Jersey. During herthree years there she taught English,monitored a dorm of underclass girls,worked as Assistant Athletic Directorand coached soccer and lacrosse.Currently pursuing a master's degree inEnglish, Penn has studied for the pasttwo summers at the Bread Loaf <strong>School</strong>of English. She also spent much of]une2005 traveling in Africa with five Blairgraduates.A 1998 <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Andrew's</strong> graduate, Pennserved as captain to the varsity soccer,basketball and lacrosse teams duringher senior year. Duringgraduate school, he developed an interestin teaching, especially the uniquechallenges of conveying scientificunderstanding to non-science majors.He was awarded an Alexander vonHumboldt Fellowship to study physicsin We st Berlin after the completion ofhis doctoral dissertation. During thatperiod, he witnessed firsthand the fallof the Berlin Wall and the unification ofGermany.Mark returned to the United <strong>St</strong>atesto join several graduate-school acquaintancesin a high technology start-upventure, and spent the next 12 yearsworking in a variety of managementand scientific positions. He tl1en left theindustry to pursue his long-time desireto teach young people.Mark enjoys stargazing, hiking,cross-country skiing and reading. Gary HarneyDirector of Choral MusicReligious <strong>St</strong>udiesB.M., University of KentuckyM.M., U11iversity of illinoisM.S., Union CoUegeAppointed 2001Gary's career as a musician began asassistant organist and choirmaster atChrist Church in Lexington, Ky., whilehe was pursuing his undergraduatedegree in organ performance. Followinghis college years, Gary went on to be theorganist in churches from 1975 until1998, when he moved into boardingschool life. Gary also spent five years asan adjunct insh·uctor in organ at SkidmoreCollege, and since 1981 has been amember of the Association of AnglicanMusicians. He is a harpsichordist, andhas founded and directed both vocaland instrumental ensembles.Part of Gary's adult life was spentworking in technology for the RaytheonCorporation, Teledyne BrownEngineering and the United <strong>St</strong>atesArmy Aviation and Missile Command.During this time, he was responsible formanaging large-scale software developmentprojects for defense systems.Gary andJo, a vocal music teacherat nearby <strong>St</strong>.
