She continued herstudies at the University of Delaware,where she discovered her passion forteaching. She worked both as a privatemath tutor and as a peer tutor and testproctor for UD's Preparatory MathProgam. Kim graduated magna cumlaude in 1999 with a bachelor's degreein mathematics education. Graduatingfirst in her major, Kim was awardedseveral prizes from the Departmentofl'v[athematics and was named theOutstanding Student Teacher in hersenior year.Although she was active in otherorganizations during her school years,Kim's greatest joy was being part of amarching band as a member of its colorguard. A 1984 cum laude graduateof St. Andrew's, Monica went on toMiddlebury College, compiling anexcellent record there. She graduatedmagna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa,with highest honors in her major, literarystudies. She spent her junior yearstudying at the Sorbonne.After teaching English at St.Andrew's in 1988 and 1989, Monicawent on to earn master's degrees fromthe Bread Loaf School of English atMiddlebury College and then studiedat Columbia University in the Ph.D.program in comparative literature.Monica brings to St. Andrew's aunique, international background. Shegrew up in Beirut with her brother,John '89, and since 1978 has lived inCairo and the United States.Monica lives with her husband, JohnAustin '83, and their children, Isabel,Alexander and Maia, in one of thehouses at the farm.97
