Levels in art, literature and history,and earned the school prize in painting.In 1984,John received his B.F.A.from SUNY Purchase, winning theDean's Commendation fo r Painting andDrawing. As part of his study for theM.F.A. at the University of Pennsylvania,which he received in 1989,Johnspent seven months in Padua, paintingfrom the Italian landscape and visitingthe many art meccas between Ve niceand Rome.Prior to coming to <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Andrew's</strong>, Johntaught painting, drawing and designfo r seven years at Temple and DrexelUniversities in Philadelphia.In 1998,John received a DelawareDivision of the Arts Fellowship inpainting and has shown his large oilcanvases in a variety of galleries, includingthe Design Arts Gallery at DrexelUniversity, the Fleisher Art Memonal,the Art Alliance of Philadelphia andthe Delaware Agricultural Museum.With his wife, Elizabeth, their children,Olivia and Aidan, and their catand two dogs, John lives in the <strong>School</strong>fa rmhouse.Hope McGrathAssistant Di,·ectOI' of AdvancementE11gl.ish, Histo1·yB.A., Colwnbia UnivenityAppointed 2005Hope grew up in Smyrna, Del., andgraduated magna cum laude from <strong>St</strong>.<strong>Andrew's</strong> in 2001. She graduatedcum laude from Columbia Universityin 2005, with majors in English andhistory. As part of the work-studyprogram, she assisted professors at theColumbia University <strong>School</strong> of SocialWo rk in their research on poverty andwelfare policies. The city's many communityinitiatives allowed her to serveas the volunteer leader of an advocacyand counseling program fo r the homeless,and act as an overnight coordinatorfor a women's shelter. Continuing herexperience at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Andrew's</strong>, Hope alsotutored 7th and 8th graders from thecity's underserved public schools.An avid bluegrass and country musicfa n, Hope likes discovering new bandsand going to concerts. She loves totravel, play cards and eat. She is tryingto learn how to cook. As a student, shewon the Baum Prize for English andthe Amos Prize for Life Sciences, coxedthe girls' varsity crew and ran crosscountry.Joy continued her studies at HarvardUniversity. Among other activities,she worked at Harvard Law <strong>School</strong>,>}Jent ti.me as a nanny, and was thehead teacher of the Sunday schoolat the Memorial Church in HarvardYard. She graduated magna cum laude,distinguishing herself as a John HarvardScholar and an Elizabeth Cary AgassizScholar. She was also awarded theCabot House Prize for exceptionalcontributions to her residential community.After graduating from Harvard,Joy traded academics for politics andmoved to Washington, D.C. After earning hisbachelor's degree in environmental sciencefrom UV A, Peter spent three yearsteaching biology and history at VirginiaEpiscopal <strong>School</strong> in Lynchburg. Duringthe summers, he led bicycle trips fo rhigh school students to England andFrance and was a backcountry ranger inYellowstone National Park.In 1984, he began work on his master'sdegree at the College ofWilliamand Mary, studying the feeding ecologyof Chesapeake Bay ospreys.Peter came to <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Andrew's</strong> afterfinishing his doctorate at the Universityof Tennessee, where he researched thepopulation dynamics of black bears inthe Great Smoky Mountains.During the spring, Peter leads groupsof <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Andrew's</strong> students on hiking tripsin the Appalachian Mountains, wherethey have assisted research on denningfe male bears. Peter's biology studentshave begun major long-term ecologicalstudies ofNoxontown Pond and otherlocal environments.Peter and his wife, Carol Ann Pala,an information specialist and <strong>School</strong>Librarian, enjoy biking, photography,gardening, reading and beekeeping.They live in one of the fa rmhouses, onewith geothermal heating and cooling,with their two children, Peter and Elsa,and their cat, Blackfeet.Ann M. Work in regionaltheaters, study and research havetaken her from New York to California.Ann's favorite stage and film rolessince college include Dorothy in "TheWizard of Oz'; Tuptim in "The Kingand I'; and Grace Farrell in "Annie': Annhas sh1died with many well knowndirectors, Jonathan Miller and MarkLamos among them, and looks forwardto continuing her work as an actressand singer when her daughter is a bitolder. Growing up in Indiana,he dreamed about the time whenhe would play professionally and evenstarted studying Spanish so he would beprepared to play winter ball in PuertoRico. At Elkhart Central High, Davidplayed for the baseball team and was onthe honor roll.David had a triple major at BeloitCollege in Wisconsin. He studiedSpanish, philosophy and government.He continued to pursue his passionfor baseball at Beloit. He pitched andplayed outfield for the Division IIIschool. He was the treasurer of theCommunity Senate and a disc jockey onthe college radio station.In 1993, David taught English inCosta Rica and met <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Andrew's</strong> Spanishteacher Ana Ramirez, whom hemarried in 1999. David earned a master'sdegree in Latin American studiesfrom Tulane University in 1997. \Vl1ileat Tulane, he combined his academicpursuits with his passion for baseball byreceiving a grant to study the history ofbaseball in Nicaragua. After graduateschool, David lived and worked in theWashington, D.C. area before marryingand coming to <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Andrew's</strong>.David enjoys cooking and reading,and has recently resumed playingtrumpet-often joining the <strong>School</strong>Orchestra.
