Chapter 11The lease on our new home on LongIsland did not begin until the fall. Lyn and thechildren spent the summer with my sisterMarg<strong>are</strong>t, in Detroit.While Lyn and the children were inMichigan, I packed up and made arrangementsto move. Needless to say, my landlord wasecstatic. Without legal rent control leases, thebuilding was next to worthless. He had offered itto me for $45,000. With a vacancy, especially onthe first floor, he could sell the building to afamily to use as their primary residence. To showhis gratitude, he gave me a check for $700.
