Baldev Duggal, the founder and owner of Duggal, the most successful lab in New York history, hadjust the opposite approach. If the service is notselling, raise the price. I don't know why Mr.Duggal went into the photo lab business. Mostpeople go into a business because they feel thatthey have a talent and or knowledge of the serviceto be performed. Mr. Duggal, to the best of myknowledge, had no understanding of thephotographic process at all. I refer to him as Mr.Duggal because he was insulted if anyone referedto him by his first name. Even his brother calledhim Mr. Duggal. Box One did all of Duggal'sblack and white work. We would charge him $6for a process and proof of a roll of film and hewould mark it up to $16 for his clients. I dobelieve that the quality of work done by Box Onehelped Duggal establish its reputation for quality, and yet, when Box One raised its price from $6 to$8, our clients yelled and screamed whileDuggal's clients stood in line to pay $16. Duggal'smark-up averaged about 150 percent over BoxOne's prices and yet Mr. Duggal was alwaysdemanding lower prices from Box One. It was aglorious day when I could afford to tell Duggal tofind another lab to do his work. The goal of doingbusiness, however, is to make money and onecannot help but respect a man who was assuccessful as Mr. Duggal.256
