GLOSSARYAshlar stoneDressed stonework, where blocks are laid inregular courses with carefully squared sides andcorners, often with fine joints.CorniceA projecting moulding at a wallhead, abovewindows and doors, or as the top horizontaldivision of the entablature in classicalarchitecture.CurtilageAn <strong>area</strong> of ground ancillary to and belonging to abuilding. The precise edges defining a building’scurtilage are largely determined by the physicalrelationship between the building and itssurroundings, and past and present ownershipand use.Diminishing coursesWhere the size of roofing slates increase as theyrun away from the ridge.Dormer windowsWindows projecting from the pitch of a roof.GableThe vertical part of an end wall of a building,contained within the roof slope.‘Great Rebuilding’ phaseA process, which took place between the 16 thand 18 th centuries, transforming the housingstock of the country. Standards of living,particularly for those of affluence, were greatlyimproved.Hipped roofRoof with four slopes, the shorter of which arereferred to as the hipped ends.HornsOn sash windows, a small extension of thevertical stiles past the meeting rails. Theseappeared from the mid-19 th century, to addstability to windows with fewer, finer glazingbars and larger panes of glass. A typical local vernacularfeature commonly combined with stonemullions.JettyProjection of an upper storey in a timber framedbuilding.Mortar filletsTriangular length of mortar at the verges of aroof, between the underside of the slates and thetop of the wall.Mullion windowLocally, these are windows with stone surroundsand stone upright ‘posts’ (“mullions”), whichdivide the glazed lights. Glass was traditionallydirectly glazed into the stone framework, withone or two opening lights set within iron subframes.‘Polite’ architectureA style of architecture introduced during the 17 thcentury and based upon national andinternational pattern books. In direct contrast tovernacular styles which are built according tolocal traditions.Rubble stoneStone walls, either un-coursed or coursedroughly, with thick joints.Sash windowWindow where the opening lights slide up anddown in a cased frame (see ‘horns’).SlatesStone roofing material. Also referred to as stonetiles in the Cotswolds. Traditionally laid indiminishing courses.‘Strap’ pointing (also known as ‘ribbon’pointing)Pointing which juts forward from the surface ofthe stone or brick usually carried out withcement- rich mortars. It is a highly unsuitablemethod of pointing historic buildings.Swept valleyRoofing valleys formed by slates or tiles cut andlaid into a curve, rather than lead or zincflashing. Occurring at any junction where tworoof pitches interject at 90°.VernacularAn architectural style ‘of its place,’ using localmaterials and local craftsmen, according to localtraditions. Usually refers to small houses andcottages of humble origins, but can also extendto large buildings of importance. Often referredto as the opposite of ‘polite’ architecture, whichis national or internationally influenced.
