goggles seem to be the ringleaders.<strong>The</strong>y’re grouped in a car park next to aparade of closed shops. It’s a no man’sland. <strong>The</strong>y don’t seem to have anyparticular focus, until almost idly, one ofthem picks a loose brick off the low wallof the Sainsbury’s Local car park andhurls it at the window of the store. <strong>The</strong>glass fractures, but doesn’t break.Apparently energised by his action, thekids begin loosening more bricks andjoining in. Before long, they’ve smashed ahole large enough to get through, andthey’re pouring inside. Freddy’s still withthem, and as I lose sight of him my anxietymounts: might there be a back door they’llall escape through, and disappear? But aminute later they start emerging, clutchingtins of food. An argument starts up, with
