It was Israel’schance to plead for mercy or acceptance by works.The Levitical Priesthood was their intermediaries or defense attorneys,enabling them to settle out of court, by offering sacrifices,which was a reminder they had sinned.The Mercy SeatThe tabernacle or God’s court for Israel was based upon the principleof receiving mercy or settling out of court (I Kings 8:32).God’s angel, however, offered no mercy (Exodus 23:20-21). Howcould an Israelite, who was guilty of breaking God’s Law, getmercy? Only by having access to the mercy seat. No one, however,could go into The Holy of Holies except The High Priestand only once a year on The Day of Atonement. Even, The HighPriest couldn’t have direct contact to the mercy seat because thetwo angelic cherubs guarded it just as they protected The Tree ofLife in The Garden of Eden. No one could have contact with “theark” to receive mercy. Until Christ came, the way into The Holyof Holies wasn’t possible. Mercy only came after Christ died.In “the ark” only the two tables of stone containing The Ten Commandmentswere there - nothing else. The mercy seat was placedright over this “ark.” The only way mercy could be obtained inGod’s court was by keeping The Ten Commandments. However,
