Application And Operating InformationHIDIn difficult locations, group replacement of all thelamps, working or not, is often more economicaland convenient than spot replacement. The same,of course, applies to ballasts which might beapproaching the end of their life. Only you can decidewhat is right for your lighting system, but what isimportant is that you have a maintenance program.Periodic cleaning of the fixtures’ lenses and reflectorsis also important in maintaining proper light output. For indoor systems, maintenance of reflectivesurfaces, such as walls and ceilings, will also helpassure proper levels of illumination.STANDBY LIGHTING AND PACKAGINGStandby LightingTo provide light during a high intensity dischargelamp’s warmup period, or the cool-down periodfollowing a power interruption which hasextinguished it, incandescent standby lighting can beincorporated. This is accomplished by use of astandby lighting device, or remote, that switches offan incandescent lamp incorporated into the fixtureonce an arc has been established, or reestablished, inthe HID lamp. Generally, standby lighting devices operateon 120 volts, so a tap must be provided on ballastsdesigned to operate at higher line voltages. The 120 volt terminal or lead on all Universal dual-,tri-, quad- and multi-volt ballasts can be used as a tapfor standby lighting when the ballast is utilized for anyof the higher voltages. Many single voltageballasts are available with a 120 volt tap and arelisted throughout the Core & Coil data section. Othersingle voltage ballasts may be available in thisversion. Consult our Customer Service Departmentfor availability and price information.Any connection to the 120 volt tap must beaccomplished by means of a slow-blow fuse. This fusewill protect the ballast from abnormal conditions inthe standby lamp circuit or its control device. The fuseshould be located in the coolest place in thefixture (below 80°C). The recommended fuseamperage and maximum auxiliary lamp wattageare listed in this catalog for each ballast suitable forstandby lighting applications.Be sure to follow the wiring instructions of thestandby lighting device manufacturer. All applicablerequirements of the National Electrical Code must bemet.PackagingStandard PackUniversal’s high intensity discharge lamp ballasts areroutinely packed in easy-to-handle cartonscontaining from 1 to 20 units per carton, depending onthe size and weight of the ballasts.
