The maximum lamp to ignitor distancefor these ignitors is 50 feet, which may vary depending on thetype of lamp, ballast, fixture, and wiring.HIDIGNITORSINSTANT RESTRIKE IGNITORSAn Instant Restrike Ignitor generates multiple pulses torestrike a lamp arc after a brief power interruption hasextinguished it, without the typical 3-minute cool-down time.A Standard Ignitor cannot restrike an arc until the lamp hashad time to sufficiently cool. Even though an Instant RestrikeIgnitor can reinitiate the lamp arc immediately upon restorationof power, the lamp is still subject to warmup. The followingchart is based on an S55 lamp.Time Lamp Is Restrike Light Output Lamp WarmupExtinguished Time On Reignition Time1 second 2 seconds 87% 35 seconds5 seconds Instant 83% 70 seconds15 seconds Instant 76% 130 seconds30 seconds Instant 62% 190 seconds1 minute Instant 46% 255 secondsCold Start Instant 36% 360 secondsPLUG REPACEABLE IGNITORSIncorporates terminals and a separate mounting base tosimplify construction and replacement.AUTOMATIC SHUTOFF IGNITORSIn the event of a lamp failure, a Standard Ignitor will continueto pulse, trying to start the lamp. This may reduce the life ofthe ignitor. An Automatic Shutoff Ignitor will apply pulses for10 to 12 minutes and then deactivate if a lamp arc cannot beinitiated. Resetting the ignitor is accomplished by momentarilyinterrupting the power to the ballast. For this reason, theseignitors are not recommended for use on unswitched circuits.SHUTOFF DEVICESIgnitor Accessory (IA) devices can be used to converta Standard Ignitor into an Automatic Shutoff Ignitor. Simplymatch the Shutoff Device catalog number on page 5-62 withthe Standard Ignitor that is supplied with the ballast. Using theIA device with the Standard Ignitor eliminates the need to buya separate Automatic Shutoff Ignitor.TEMPERATURE RATINGMost ignitors are rated for a 105°C maximum casetemperature. Consult ballast specification sheets atwww.unvlt.com for specific details.PAGE 5-42FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL1-800-BALLAST(225-5278)
