Teacher Guide—Earth Science ModuleActivity 4: Extreme Weather and EstuariesFeatured NERRS Estuary:North Carolina National EstuarineResearch Reservehttp://nerrs.noaa.gov/Reserve.aspx?ResID=NOCActivity SummaryStudents investigate how hurricanes can affect NERRSestuaries. Students begin by studying the North CarolinaNational Estuarine Research Reserve (NCNERR) in theCape Fear area with Google Earth and predict whichareas of the reserve might be more vulnerable to theonslaught of high winds, heavy rain and storm surgethan others. Then students monitor and interpret thechanges in water quality factors day by day as a severestorm approaches, strikes the estuary, and then dissipates.Learning ObjectivesStudents will be able to:1. Describe the features and landforms associated witha coastal estuary.2. Predict how major storm events affect NERRSreserves in the United States.3. Investigate and interpret changes in water quality inan estuary due to a severe weather event.4. Determine the relationship between thecharacteristics of an extreme weather event (heavywind, torrential rains and storm surge) and thesubsequent change in water quality over time.Grade Levels9-12Teaching Time3 (55 minute) class sessions + homeworkOrganization of the ActivityThis activity consists of 3 parts which help deepenunderstanding of estuarine systems:Investigating an EstuaryWhich NERRS are Affected by Hurricanes?Impact of Extreme Weather on an EstuaryBackgroundThe activity focuses on a portion ofthe North Carolina NERR centered onZeke’s Island, which is a little north ofCape Fear. Zeke’s Island is located inBrunswick and New Hanover counties, approximately four miles south of KureBeach. This component of theNorth Carolina NERR is bounded byEarth Science Module—Activity 4
