寓 言 故 事羊 披 虎 皮羊披虎皮A sheep covered itself in tiger’s skin and strutted among the other animals in a forest. However,when the sheep saw a wolf, it was still shaken with fear. Why was that?It was because beneath its disguise, thesheep was still just a sheep, and when itsaw the wolf, it was so stricken with fearthat it forgot that it was supposed to be atiger.1

寓 意 :虛 有 外 表 卻 沒 有 實 力 的 人 , 是 經 不 起 考 驗的 , 一 旦 碰 到 兇 猛 的 對 手 , 自 己 膽 小 的 本羊披虎皮性 全 都 會 表 露 無 遺 。The moral of the story is that a person who appears impressive but does not have real substancewill fail in a real test. Once faced with a strong opponent or a difficult challenge, the person’sweakness will be exposed for all to see.2

寓 言 故 事朝 三 暮 四宋 國 狙 公 養 了 一 群 猴 子 , 他 很 會 跟 猴朝三暮四子 溝 通 , 猴 子 也 很 喜 歡 他 。不 過 , 猴 子 食 量 很 大 , 狙 公 也 就 越 來越 窮 了 。有 一 天 , 狙 公 對 猴 子 說 「 我 每 天 早 上給 三 顆 栗 子 , 晚 上 給 四 顆 , 好 嗎 ?」, 猴子 聽 了 很 不 高 興 , 亂 叫 亂 跳 。In the country of Sung there was a monkey keeper named Jiu-gung. He raised many monkeysand could understand their thoughts as well as feelings. Jiu-gun was very good to his monkeys,and the monkeys liked their keeper as well. However, Jiu-gun’s monkeys had voraciousappetites, and soon he found himself short of money to buy food for his monkeys. So one day,Jiu-gung told the monkeys that he had to reduce their food rations. “Each of you will get threechestnuts each morning and four chestnuts each evening.Is that enough for you?” Since they were used to eatingmore, the monkeys were upset. They startedto shout loudly and jump up and down in anger.3

寓 言 故 事楚王好細腰Once upon a time, King Ling of Chu loved people withthin waists. The officials in his imperial court kissed up tohim by losing weight to please him. They were alwayson a diet, and only had one meal a day. Everyday,as soon as these officials got out of bed, theyexhale to deflate their stomachs just so theycould tighten their waists more with a belt.5

一 年 後 , 朝 中 所 有 臣 子 全 都 餓 得 枯 黃瘦 黑 , 體 力 不 支 。寓 意 :楚王好細腰指 風 氣 往 往 是 上 面 怎 麼 說 下 面 就 怎 麼 做 而形 成 的 , 不 管 是 好 的 或 是 壞 的 。One year later, all the ministers and officials in his court were skinny, unhealthy and on the brinkof starvation.The moral of this story is that fashion trends are often set by the social elites. Their decision willaffect the whole society, regardless of whether their decision is a good one or a bad one.6

寓 言 故 事一 顧 十 倍有 一 個 人 到一顧十倍市 集 賣 馬 , 站 了三 天 都 沒 有 人 來看 馬 , 他 便 跑 去找 伯 樂 。他 要 伯 樂 到 市 集 賣 馬 的 地 方 , 繞 著他 的 馬 走 三 圈 看 一 看 , 要 走 時 再 回 頭 看 幾次 。A horse trader tried to sell his horses in a market for three consecutive days but couldn’t sell anyhorse. So he went to seek the help of Bo Le, the famous horse expert, and urged Bo Le to go tohis booth in the market and walk around his horses three times. Then he wanted Bo Le to stop toexamine his horses closely, and tolook back several times at his horsesas he leaves the booth.7

伯 樂 答 應 並 來 到 市 集 上 , 照 著 之 前 說的 做 。 沒 一 會 兒 , 這 隻 馬 的 價 格 漲 了 十寓 意 :一 方 面 指 有 才 華 能 力 的 人 , 需 要 名 家 的 評倍 。一顧十倍斷 及 推 荐 才 會 受 到 社 會 大 眾 的 重 視 , 不 過另 一 方 面 也 諷 刺 許 多 人 盲 從 及 崇 拜 權 威 的現 象 。Bo Le agreed to help and went to the market fair. He did as he was told. The moment Bo Lewalked away, people gathered around the horse trader. Before long, the price of the horses hadincreased tenfold.The moral of this story is that a talented person needs to be discovered by an expert in order to berecognized by society. On the other hand, this story is also used to ridicule those who blindly followauthorities.8

寓 言 故 事山 雞 舞 鏡山雞舞鏡During the Three Kingdoms era, a southern stategave a rooster to the warlord Tsau-tsau. The rooster hadbeautiful feathers. The only problem was that rooster wasreluctant to display its feathers. It stayed quiet and still like a woodentoy. People wanted to make the rooster do something. Anything. But to no avail. The warlord’sbrother Tsau-chung had an idea. He asked for a big mirror and placed it in front of the rooster.9

山 雞 十 分 喜 歡 自 己 的 羽 毛 , 看 到 自己 的 影 像 , 以 為 另 有 一 隻 山 雞 , 就 跳 啊叫 個 不 停 , 直 到 活 活 把 自 己 累 死 。山雞舞鏡寓 意 :做 人 不 可 顧 影 自 憐 , 自 鳴 得 意 。The rooster loved to see its own reflection in the mirror, beautiful feathers and all. It probablythought that the rooster in the mirror was one of its own. It was excited, and wouldn’t stop jumpingand crowing all over like it was possessed. Finally, the rooster exhausted itself to death.The moral of the story is that arrogance feeds on itself. Only by listening to others can you knowwho you truly are.10

寓 言 故 事一 飯 千 金韓 信 年 輕 時 在 家 鄉 淮 陰 , 生 活 十 分 困一飯千金苦 。 有 一 次 在 城 外 河 邊 釣 魚 , 看 到 很 多 在河 邊 清 洗 絲 棉 絮 的 老 婆 婆 。其 中 有 個 老 婆 婆看 韓 信 可 憐 , 便 拿 飯給 他 吃 。 韓 信 十 分 感激 她 , 便 對 她 說 將 來一 定 會 報 答 她 。When Han-shin was young, he was in very poor. One day he was very hungry, so he decided to goto the river and try his luck at fishing. There he saw many old women washing clothes along theriverbanks, and after a while they could see that he wasn’t any good at fishing.One old woman felt sorry for this hungry young man, so she gave him some food. Han-shin wasgrateful and told her that he would remember her kindness and pay her back in the future. The old11

老 婆 婆 聽 了之 後 很 不 高 興 , 表示 這 麼 做 並 不 是 希一飯千金望 韓 信 將 來 報 答 她的 。後 來 , 韓 信 成 為 大 將 軍 並 且 被 封 為 楚王 , 他 想 起 從 前 曾 受 過 老 婆 婆 的 恩 惠 , 便派 人 送 酒 菜 給 她 吃 , 另 外 還 給 她 黃 金 一 千兩 來 答 謝 她 。woman wasn’t too happy to hear about this. Shesaid that she didn’t give him food because sheexpected anything in return.Later, Han-shin became a great general, andhe was crowned the King of Chu. But he stillremembered the act of kindness shown to himby the old women years go. So he sent peopleto bring her lots of good food and wine, andgave her a thousand pieces of gold to thank herfor that day years ago.12

寓 意 :一飯千金受 人 恩 惠 不 可 以 忘 記 , 就 算 所 受 的 恩 惠 是很 小 的 , 但 在 困 難 的 時 候 , 這 一 點 點 的 幫助 是 很 可 貴 的 ; 等 到 我 們 有 能 力 時 , 應 該重 重 地 回 報 當 初 施 恩 的 人 才 對 。The moral of the story is that we should never forget those who have helped us. The favor doesn’thave to be grand or expensive, because we are in need, even small acts of kindness means a lot tous. But as soon as we are able, we should always show our gratitude by repaying our benefactors infull, if not more.13

寓 言 故 事黔 驢 技 窮古 時 在 貴 州 沒 有 驢 子 , 當 地 的 人 根 本就 不 認 識 驢 子 的 樣 子 。 有 一 天 , 有 一 個 人從 別 處 用 船 運 了 一 頭 驢 子 到 貴 州 , 並 把 牠黔驢技窮放 在 山 下 。當 老 虎 看 到 驢 子時 , 因 為 從 來 沒 見過 , 所 以 不 敢 靠近 , 當 驢 子 叫 起來 時 , 老 虎 嚇 得沒 命 似 的 逃 。A long time ago there were no donkeys in Guizhou province.One day, a man brought the firstdonkey to Guizhou by boat, and raised it near the foothills of a mountain.On day a tiger living the same foothills saw this donkey. However, curious of the novelty thatthis strange beast was, the tiger came near but stayed his distance. The donkey also saw the tigerapproaching and let out a loud cry, “Hee-Haw! Hee-Haw!” The tiger was terrified by this strangeyell and bolted away in terror.14

日 子 久黔驢技窮了 , 老 虎 習 慣了 驢 子 的 叫聲 , 就 不 再 感到 害 怕 了 。有 一 天 便 走 到 驢子 身 邊 , 故 意 碰 牠 一 下 , 試 試 牠 有 什 麼 本領 , 結 果 驢 子 生 氣 了 , 提 起 腳 來 踢 老 虎 。But after a few days had gone by, the same tiger came by the donkey again. The donkey cried out,but this time the tiger had gotten used to the noise the donkey made, and the tiger was not afraid ofthe donkey’s yell anymore. So the tiger decided to test the ability of the donkey further by walkingclose to the donkey and teasing it with its paw. The donkey got angry and raised its hind legs tokick the tiger. But the tiger escaped unharmed.15

一 連 好 幾 次 , 老 虎 便 知 道 驢 子 雖 然大 , 可 是 實 際 上 沒 有 什 麼 本 領 , 只 會 踢 踢而 已 , 於 是 放 膽 走 到 驢 子 身 邊 , 把 驢 子 吃黔驢技窮掉 了 。寓 意 :看 起 來 好 像 很 龐 大 的 貴 州 驢 , 實 際 上 外 強中 乾 , 一 點 厲 害 的 本 領 也 沒 有 。 形 容 那 些沒 有 什 麼 才 能 的 人 , 只 會 虛 張 聲 勢 唬 別人 , 本 身 沒 有 一 點 真 實 才 學 。After a couple of tries, the tiger realized that even though the donkey looked big, it was actuallyweak and harmless. The donkey’s only trick is kicking with its hindlegs. So the tiger went near the donkey again. Only this time, thetiger lunged at the donkey, killed it, and ate it.This story is used to criticize those who bluffto appear formidable or intelligent, buthave no real capabilities whatsoever.16

寓 言 故 事智 擒 飛 鷹魚 鷹 常 來 偷 抓 魚 吃 , 養 魚 人 便 做 了智擒飛鷹一 個 張 開 雙 手 、 穿 蓑 衣 、 戴 斗笠 、 拿 竹 竿 的 稻 草 人 站 在魚 池 裡 , 魚 鷹 以 為 是 真人 , 不 敢 下 來 。由 於 稻 草 人 一 直 不 動 , 魚 鷹 飛 下 來 一看 , 原 來 是 假 人 , 便 又 來 吃 魚 , 吃 飽 就 站Fish hawks usually dive into the fishpond to catch fish. To fend off the fish hawks, the owner of oneof these ponds made a scarecrow of himself working in the fishpond. At first, the fish hawks thoughtthe scarecrow was a real person; so they dared not plunge into the water in pursuit of a fish.However, because the scarecrow never moved. The fish hawksgrew suspicious. They took a closer look at the scarecrow andrealized that it was actually a fake. After that, they continuedto eat fish from the pond and even stood right on top of thescarecrow after they ate their full.17

在 斗 笠 上 , 還 發 出 “ 假 假 " 的 叫 聲 , 好 像嘲 笑 的 說 :「 假 的 , 人 是 假 的 !」。於 是 養 魚 人 假 裝 成 稻 草 人 , 當 魚 鷹 吃智擒飛鷹飽 飛 到 斗 笠 上 時 , 便 抓 住 牠 們 的 爪 子 , 笑著 說 :「 這 一 次 可 是 真 的 人 了 !」寓 意 :老 是 依 照 過 去 的 經 驗 辦 事 , 不 注 意 是 否 有新 的 變 化 , 就 容 易 吃 虧 上 當 。They even cried out, “gah-gah-gah,” as if mocking the owner and saying, “See! We know thescarecrow is a fake!”Seeing this, the pond owner improvised his next move. He put on a disguise and pretended to bea scarecrow himself. That day, when the fish hawks were full and rested on the pond owner’s leafhat, he caught the fish hawks by grabbing their talons.The pond owner then laughed heartily. “This time, Iam no fake!”The moral of this story is that in a contest, if youalways use the same moves without judging thesituation correctly, you will be vulnerable to youropponent’s countermoves.18

寓 言 故 事楊 朱 喻 弟楊 朱 的 弟 弟楊朱喻弟楊 布 , 有 一 天 穿著 白 衣 服 出 門 找朋 友 , 中 途 卻 下起 雨 來 , 只 好 跑到 朋 友 家 躲 雨 。他 將 白 色 濕 衣 服 脫 下 , 換 上 朋 友 的 黑色 衣 服 , 吃 完 飯 後 , 天 也 漸 漸 黑 了 , 他 就穿 著 黑 衣 服 回 家 。On day, Yang-zhu’s younger brother Yang-bu dressed in white and went out to see a friend. Onthe way to his friend’s place, it started to rain. He ran to his friend’s and stayed there until the rainstopped. His friend offered him some dry clothes that were black. He changed out of his whiteclothes and went home in his black clothes in the evening after he had dinner at his friend’s place.19

到 家 門 口 時 , 他 家 的 狗 不 知 道 楊 布 換衣 服 , 便 撲 向 前 並 朝 著 他 大 叫 , 楊 布 生 氣便 要 拿 木 棒 打 狗 。楊朱喻弟楊 朱 聽 到 跑 出 來 , 對 弟 弟 說 :「 不要 打 牠 ! 想 想 看 , 如 果 這 隻 狗 出 去 時 是 白的 , 回 來 時 變 成 黑 的 , 你 也 會 覺 得 奇 怪 ,更 何 況 天 又 這 麼 黑 , 不 是 嗎 ?」When he arrived home, his dog didn’t know that Yang-bu had changed his clothes. The dogonly saw a man in black and barked at him like crazy. Yang-bu was very angry at his dog. He wasjust about to beat the dog with a stick when he was stopped by Yang-zhu, who rushed out whenhe heard the commotion. “Don’t hit the dog! It’s not the dog’s fault. Think about it! If it were thedog that went out a white dog in the morningand came home a black dog, you wouldhave found that very strangetoo. Besides, it is so dark now.No wonder the dog couldn’trecognize you. Am I right?”20

楊朱喻弟寓 意 :被 人 誤 解 要 先 從 自 己 身 上 找 原 因 , 不 可 以不 分 青 紅 皂 白 把 過 錯 推 到 別 人 身 上 。The moral of this story is that if you ever find yourself misunderstood by others, you should firstfigure out if you might not have made yourself clear, if you might have misleading, before you startblaming others.21

寓 言 故 事蛇 神有 一 年 久 旱 不 雨 , 水 池 都 乾 了 , 住 在池 中 的 動 物 都 搬 走 了 , 最 後 只 剩 下 兩 條蛇 。蛇神要 搬 走 前 , 小 蛇 對 大 蛇 說 :「 如 果 你走 前 面 , 我 跟 在 後 面 , 人 們 看 到 一 定 會 來殺 我 們 , 不 如 換 一 種 方 式 , 你 背 著 我 走 ,因 為 從 來 沒 有 人 看 過 蛇 會 這 樣 行 走 , 所 以A long time ago, a serious drought hit. All the ponds dried out, and all the animals moved out of thepond. In the end, only two snakes were left.But before they made the move, the little snake told the big snake, “If you take the lead and Ifollow you, as soon as people see two snakes crawling away on the roadside they will definitely killus both. So I have a better idea. Why don’t you carry me on your back?22

會 把 我 們 當 做 是蛇神蛇 神 , 對 我 們 敬而 遠 之 , 這 樣 我們 就 安 全 了 。」大 蛇 覺 得 有 道 理 , 就 背 起 小 蛇 穿 過 大 路 ,果 然 不 出 所 料 , 所 有 看 見 這 兩 條 蛇 的 人 都不 敢 靠 近 它 們 , 回 去 後 更 是 向 旁 人 說 :「我 剛 才 看 見 蛇 神 了 。」Nobody has ever seen snakes crawl this way, so they will consider us the Snake Gods. They willleave us alone, and we will have a safe journey.”The big snake bought the words of the little snake.He carried the little snake on his back and crawledacross a busy street. All the people who sawthese two snakes reacted exactly as the littlesnake had predicted, and left them alone.Some even told their neighbors, “Guesswhat? I saw the Snake Gods on the road.”23

寓 意 :人 們 要 懂 得 如 何 識 別 變 化 多 端 的 詭 計 , 看問 題 不 能 只 看 表 面 , 應 該 要 透 過 一 些 現 象蛇神去 分 析 及 把 握 事 物 原 有 的 本 質 。The moral of this story is that people have to recognize the tricks played by others. Sometimes it isworth it to dig deeper into an issue in order to see what the truth is.24

寓 言 故 事魯 人 徙 越有 個 魯 國 人 很 會 編 織 鞋 子 ,魯人徙越他 的 妻 子 很 會 織 白 色 的 絲 織品 , 可 用 來 做 帽 子 ,因 為 夫 妻 倆 都 有 一 技之 長 , 所 以 打 算 搬 到 越國 去 討 生 活 。鄰 居 聽 到 後 就 勸 他 說 :「 假 如 你 真 的搬 到 越 國 去 , 一 定 會 變 得 更 窮 困 。」 魯 國人 說 :「 為 什 麼 ?」。Once upon a time, there was a goodshoemaker in the country of Lu. His wife isa good hat maker. Since both were skillfulworkers, they thought they could move to thecountry of Yue and start a new life there.Their neighbor heard about their intentions, and tried to persuade them to stay. “If you really moveto the country of Yue, you will be poor and suffer.”25

鄰 居 說 :「 因 為越 國 人 都 喜 歡 光 著 腳走 路 , 也 習 慣 披 頭 散魯人徙越髮 , 你 們 夫 妻 倆 雖 然都 有 一 技 之 長 , 可 是在 越 國 卻 是 派 不 上 用場 。 所 以 不 會 挨 餓 受 苦 是 不 可 能 的 。」寓 意 :事 物 的 價 值 , 是 要 看 社 會 的 需 要 , 要 是 不符 合 , 甚 至 與 社 會 脫 節 , 只 會 空 口 談 論 價值 , 是 一 點 用 處 也 沒 有 。The couple asked why, and the neighbor replied, ”The people of Yue never wear shoes, becausethey love to walk barefooted, and they never wear hats. Even though both of you are skilledworkers, your skills have no use there. You will be doomed to a life of poverty if you move there.”The moral of this story is that, whether something is valuable or not is determined by the demandsof the market. If what you offer is not what society wants, it is still worthless, no matter howvaluable you think it is. 26

寓 言 故 事涸 轍 之 鮒涸轍之鮒Because of a famine, Zhuang-Zhou went to borrow grain from Lord Jain He-Hou. Lord Jian He-Hou replied, “Sure, but let me give you the grain at the end of the year. Because at that time, mypeople will pay me rice from their harvest as tax. Then I will be able to lend you the grain youneed.”Zhuang-Zhou replied, “Yesterday I saw a carp on the road as I was walking. The carp beggedme to scoop some water over him, so he wouldn’t die. I promised him that I would go to thesouth, dig a canal from the West River, and use the water from the canal to save him.”27

涸轍之鮒Hearing this, the carp was very angry. “I am dying now,” he said. “I just ask you for some water tokeep me alive, and you’re telling me that you’re going to get me the water I desperately need froma thousand miles away! This is no way to help someone. No doubt when you have returned, I willbe long dead.”28

涸轍之鮒寓 意 :及 時 幫 助 別 人 , 是 很 重 要 的 事 , 一 般 大 家所 感 激 的 是 雪 中 送 炭 , 而 不 是 錦 上 添 花 。當 朋 友 有 難 , 適 時 地 幫 上 一 己 之 力 , 才 是真 正 的 朋 友 。The moral of the story is that a small favor in bad times is more valuable than a large favor in goodtimes. People will be grateful to those who give them a hand while they are in hardship. And truefriends are those who help us when we need help the most.29

寓 言 故 事驕 者 必 敗有 一 天 , 吳 王 坐 船 過 江 時 , 經 過 一座 滿 是 獼 猴 的 山 , 猴 群 一 看 到 船 嚇 得 全往 山 裡 逃 , 只 有 一 隻驕者必敗猴 子 , 在 地 上 爬 來 爬去 , 好 像 在 向 吳 王 誇耀 牠 矯 健 的 身 手 。吳 王 便 拿 起 弓 箭 向 牠 射 去 , 猴 子 竟然 將 箭 給 接 住 , 吳 王 就 叫 來 隨 從 幫 忙 射 猴子 , 猴 子 便 被 射 死 了 。One day, when the King of Wu was riding a boat to cross a river, he passed by a mountain that wasinhabited by a group of monkeys. All the monkeys scurried away as soon as they saw the boat.However, there was this one particular monkey thatdidn’t run away. It walked and ran and strutted onall fours, as if it were showing off his agility tothe king.The King of Wu then shot an arrow at the monkey.To his surprise, the monkey caught the arrow with hishands. The King of Wu then asked his soldiers to shoot atthe monkey. Soon, the monkey died from a rain of arrows.30

吳 王 對 好 友 顏 不 疑 說 :「 這 隻 猴 子 自驕者必敗以 為 聰 明 , 頻 頻 向 我 誇 耀 , 沒 想 到 卻 被 我一 箭 射 死 , 一 個 人 千 萬 不 可 以 用 自 以 為 是的 態 度 去 對 待 別 人 呀 !」寓 意 :喜 歡 誇 耀 及 表 現 自 己 的 才 能 , 是 很 容 易 遇到 災 難 , 也 就 是 我 們 所 說的 驕 者 必 敗 的 道 理 , 尤其 在 待 人 接 物 時 更 不 可以 犯 這 種 錯 誤 才 是 。The King of Wu said to his good friend Yen Bu-yi, “This monkey was too arrogant. It showed offin front of a king. It probably didn’t expect me to shoot him. We as humans should never be tooarrogant and treat others like dirt!”The moral of the story is that pride goes before destruction, “a haughty spirit before a fall.” Weshould always be humble when we deal with other people.31

寓 言 故 事染 絲墨 子 在 路 上 看 到 有 人 正 在 路 旁 染 絲 ,看 了 一 會 兒 , 墨 子 嘆 了 一 口 氣 說 :「 把 潔白 的 蠶 絲 放 到 青 色 的 染 缸 , 蠶 絲 就 會 變 成染絲青 色 的 ; 若 是 放 到 黃 色 的 染 缸 中 , 便 會 變成 黃 色 的 。 蠶 絲 的 顏 色 完 全 會 因 染 缸 的 顏色 而 隨 之 改 變 , 染 了 五 次 , 蠶 絲 的 顏 色 就會 改 變 五 次 , 所 以 在 染 絲 的 過 程 中 , 是 一定 要 小 心 謹 慎 才 是 。」Mo-tze saw someone dying silk beside the road. He let out a sighafter observing for a while. “If we put clean white silk into agreen tank, the silk will be stained green. If thesilk is put into a yellow tank, the silk will bestained yellow. The color of the silk varieswith the dye inside different tanks. If youput the same silk into five different tanks,its color will change five times. Thereforewe should be cautious about which tank weput the silk in,” he said.32

寓 意 :這 是 指 人 的 生 長 環 境染絲就 像 在 染 絲 一 樣 ,會 因 為 染 缸 的 顏色 而 跟 著 變 化 ,所 以 對 於 所 處 的 環境 , 一 定 要 謹 慎 的 選 擇 , 在 好 的 環 境 及 良好 的 師 友 影 響 下 , 自 然 會 有 良 好 的 品 德 及人 格 , 不 會 誤 入 歧 途 。The moral of the story is that we are influenced byour immediate surrounding and by the company wekeep, just as silk color is determined by the differentdyes in each tank. Therefore, we have to choose ourenvironment and our friends carefully. If the companywe keep is beneficial to us, we will certainly not goastray on the path of life.33

寓 言 故 事走 馬 看 花在 民 間 傳 說 中 , 有 一 位 叫 「 貴 良 」 的跛 子 , 他 想 娶 美 嬌 娘 , 另 外 也 有 位 叫 「 葉青 」 的 姑 娘 , 鼻 子 有 點 缺 陷 , 想 嫁 個 英 俊走馬看花的 丈 夫 , 於 是 兩 人 都 去 拜 託 媒 人 幫 忙 。媒 人 便 想 將 兩 個 人 湊 成 一 對 , 於 是 在 介 紹對 方 時 , 只 說 對 方 的 優 點 , 不 提 缺 點 , 到了 見 面 那 天 , 媒 人 叫 貴 良 騎 馬 經 過 葉 青 的家 門 口 , 並 要 葉 青 手 拿 鮮 花 , 遮 住 鼻 子 假Chinese legend has it that once upon a time, there wasa crippled man who wanted to marry a beautiful girl.Also, there was a girl who had a flat nose but wantedto be married to a handsome guy. They both foundthe same matchmaker to help them locate their idealpartner.The matchmaker thought that these two might be agood match. She mentioned all the good things abouteach person to the other, without saying anythingabout their shortcomings. She then arranged a datefor the two to meet for their first time.34

走馬看花裝 在 看 花 , 然 後 靠 著 門 站 著 。果 然 , 雙 方 看 過 後 都 十 分 滿 意 , 直 到結 婚 當 天 , 才 知 道 對 方 真 正 的 模 樣 , 想 當初 一 個 「 走 馬 」、 一 個 「 看 花 」, 都 沒 看清 楚 , 不 禁 好 笑 , 事 後 人 們 便 將 這 件 趣 事傳 開 了 。The matchmaker asked the man with the limp to ride a horse and pass by the girl’s house. Sheasked the girl to cover her nose with a flower, and pretend that she was observing the flower whilestanding in front of the entrance to her house.As the matchmaker had predicted, both saw just enough of the other person and were satisfied.Both decided to get married. They didn’t know exactly what the other person looked like untilafter they were married and he lifted her bridal veil. At that moment, they both realized that theirbrief meeting happened when the cripple was “on the horse” and the girl’s nose was “covered by aflower.” People soon started to spread the news of this marriage as a joke.35

寓 意 :本 句 比 喻 匆 匆 走 過 , 只 看 到 表 面 現 象 , 來不 及 觀 察 清 楚 。走馬看花This expression essentially says that a cursory glance is often not enough to see the truth behindthings.36

寓 言 故 事吳 牛 喘 月吳 牛 是 生 長 在 江 南 一 帶 的 牛 , 牠 最吳牛喘月怕 中 午 炎 熱 的 太 陽 。 因 此 , 不 是 泡 在 水 塘裡 , 就 是 躲 在 樹 下 。 到 了 晚 上 , 牠 以 為 月亮 是 中 午 的 太 陽 , 嚇 得 一 直 喘 氣 。晉 朝 有 位 尚 書 令 叫 「 滿 奮 」, 有 一 次晉 武 帝 叫 他 坐 在 北 窗 下 , 他 十 分 怕 吹 風 ,The ox of Wu is a kind of ox that grows in southern China. It hates the scorching sun in the middleof the day. Thus, during the day, the ox of Wu usually cools itself in the river, or hides under theshade of a tree. If the ox sees the moon at night, it would even mistake the moon for the sun, and itgasps a lot as if from heat exhaustion.During the Jin Dynasty, there was a royal secretary named Man-fen. One day, Man-fen was calledupon by Emperor Jinwudi (the emperor of Jin) to be seated next to the north window. Since Man-37

又 沒 注 意 窗 口 有 一 扇 透明 的 琉 璃 屏 風 , 便 左右 為 難 不 敢 去 坐 。吳牛喘月武 帝 看 到 滿 奮 為難 的 樣 子 , 於 是 指 著琉 璃 屏 風 笑 起 來 , 這 時 滿 奮 才 知 道 自 己 鬧笑 話 , 於 是 走 向 北 窗 , 自 嘲 :「 臣 猶 如 吳牛 , 見 月 而 喘 。」fen was a frail person, he was afraid of catching a cold from the chilly wind blowing in from thenorth window. So he hesitated, without noticing that the window had been covered by a transparentscreen that blocked the cold wind.Emperor Jinwudi saw Man-fen’s hesitation. He laughed and pointed out the shield to Man-fen.Man-fen saw the screen and realized that he had just made a fool of himself. He walked to the northwindow, and joked about his own cowardice on the spot. He said, “I am like an ox of Wu, gaspingover the moon.”38

吳牛喘月寓 意 :比 喻 人 對 事 物 過 份 害 怕 , 還 不 明 白 實 際 情況 , 只 靠 表 面 就 下 錯 誤 的 判 斷 ; 也 可 以 指酷 熱 的 夏 天 。This expression is used to refer to someone who has a strong fear or dislike of something andmakes a decision based on instinct alone without realizing what is actually going on. This proverbcan also refer to a scorching summer day.39

寓 言 故 事郢 書 燕 說有 人 從 楚 國 的 郢 都 , 寫 了 一 封 信 給燕 國 的 相 國 , 由 於 是 在 晚 上 寫 信 , 燭 光 的亮 度 不 太 夠 , 於 是 寫 信郢書燕說的 人 便 對 拿 燭 火 的 人說 :「 舉 燭 」, 也 就是 把 燭 火 舉 高 一 點 。寫 信 的 人 順 手將 「 舉 燭 」 寫 在 信 上了 , 這 兩 個 字 跟 整 封 信 的 內 容 完 全 無 關 ,燕 國 相 國 看 完 這 封 信 之 後 , 十 分 高 興 。Someone from Yindu of the country Chu wrote a letter to the minister of the country of Yang.The letter was written in the evening. Due to the lack of light, this person asked his servant to“hold the candle higher,” so he could see what he was writing.The one who wrote the letter accidentally included the words “hold the candle higher” in his letter,which was totally unrelated to everything else that was written in the letter. When the minister ofYang finished reading the letter, he was very pleased.40

郢書燕說並 對 「 舉 燭 」 作 了 解 釋 說 :「 舉 燭 , 就 是說 , 要 實 施 提 倡 光 明 清 正 的 政 策 , 而 首 先應 該 要 推 舉 才 能 高 和 品 德 好 的 賢 人 , 來 擔任 國 家 的 重 大 措 施 , 這 兩 個 字 真 是 寫 得 太好 了 。」 於 是 將 這 項 提 議 報 告 燕 王 , 燕 國也 因 此 治 理 得 很 好 。He even explained the words “hold the candle higher” by saying, “These words mean that ourcountry should implement a sunshine policy, where no dirty works and briberies are allowed. Andto this end, our country will need to appoint people with competence and good virtues to higherpositions. The words ”hold the candle higher” is indeed an excellent expression!” So the ministerproposed the plan to the king, and his country benefited.41

寓 意 :比 喻 穿 鑿 附 會 , 在 別 人 的 原 意 之 外 任 意 加入 自 己 的 臆 測 。郢書燕說This expression is used to refer to someone who gives strained interpretations or evenmisinterpretations to an original idea and draws farfetched analogies.42

寓 言 故 事識 途 老 馬春 秋 時 代 , 齊 國 宰 相 管 仲 跟 著 齊 桓 公識途老馬攻 打 孤 竹 國 ( 今 河 北 省 盧 龍 縣 到 遼 寧 朝 陽縣 一 帶 ), 去 攻 打 的 時 候 是 春 天 , 回 來 的時 候 已 經 是 冬 天 了 , 沿 路 的 景 色 事 物 都 不一 樣 了 ,因 此 軍 隊 迷 失 方 向 找 不 到 回 程 的 道路 , 大 家 都 很 著 急 , 這 時 管 仲 說 :「 不 要慌 , 老 馬 可 以 作 我 們 的 嚮 導 , 因 為 牠 們 有經 驗 , 一 定 認 得 路 。」During the Spring and Autumn Period, the minister of the country of Qi, Guan Zhong, accompaniedLord Huan of Qi in attacking Guzhu (a province now situated between the Hebei and Liaoningprovinces). When they set off on the expedition it was spring. But when they start to return home,it was already deep winter. Because of the snow,everything looked different than before, and thehuge army got lost on its way home. Everyonewas worried. Everyone except Guan Zhong thatis. He said, "We can use the wisdom of an oldhorse. Release the old horses and follow them,and we will find the way home.”43

識途老馬寓 意 :He then gathered and released a coupleof old horses and let them lead theexpedition. The army followed these oldhorses and eventually found its way backhome to Qi, safe and sound.The proverb refers to an experiencedperson who is familiar with a particularsituation, and therefore is able lead therest.44

寓 言 故 事鐵 杵 磨 針李 白 小 時 候 , 不 肯 用 功 讀 書 又 怕 碰 到鐵杵磨針困 難 , 常 常 把 書 本 丟 下 就 跑 出 去 玩 。有 一 天 , 他 到 郊 外 玩 , 在 一 間 農 舍 門口 看 到 一 位 老 太 太 , 正 在 石 頭 上 努 力 地 磨一 根 鐵 杵 ( 舂 米 或 搗 衣 的 棒 槌 ), 李 白 好奇 地 問 :「 老 婆 婆 您 磨 這 個 做 什 麼 ?」Li Bai (a famous Chinese poet) did not study very hard when he was young. He often quit when hetries to learn something difficult. So he ended up playing more than he studied.One day, he passed by a farmhouse and saw a granny grinding a thick iron pestle (which was usedfor grinding rice or washing clothes) on a stone. Li Bai was curious and went over to ask her,“Granny, why are you grinding this?”45

老 婆 婆 笑 著說 :「 我 要 把 它 磨成 一 根 針 !」 李 白鐵杵磨針忍 不 住 笑 說 :「 這 麼粗 的 鐵 杵 要 磨 成 針 , 根 本 就 不 可 能 啊 !」這 時 老 婆 婆 很 嚴 肅 地 對 他 說 :「 只 要 堅 持不 斷 地 磨 , 怎 麼 知 道 不 會 成 功 呢 !」。She then replied with a smile, “I want togrind this pestle into a needle.” Li Baiwas very surprised. “This thick pestle?That’s impossible!” The granny said to himseriously, "Why is it impossible? As long asI persist every day, this pestle will only getsmaller. As long as I persist, one day I willsucceed!”46

李 白 聽 完 覺 得 很 有 道 理 , 從 此 以 後 便鐵杵磨針用 功 讀 書 , 遇 到 困 難 便 想 到 「 鐵 杵 磨 針 」這 件 事 , 便 有 了 勇 氣 及 毅 力 。寓 意 :刻 苦 鑽 研 就 像 將 鐵 杵 磨 成 針 。 後 用 來 勉 勵人 要 刻 苦 用 功 。Li Bai was greatly touched after hearing this. He devoted himself to studying after he went back.Whenever he had difficulties in his learning, he would think of the granny who grinded the pestle.The moral of the story is that studying is like grinding the pestle. This is a proverb ofencouragement telling people to try harder when they study.47

寓 言 故 事杞 人 憂 天大 約 三 千 年 前 在 今 河 南 杞 縣 , 有 個小 國 叫 杞 國 , 有 個 人 膽 子 很 小 , 老 愛 瞎 操心 , 常 會 想 一 些 奇 怪 的 問 題 , 讓 人 覺 得 莫杞人憂天名 其 妙 。他 常 拿 著 大 蒲 扇 在門 前 乘 涼 並 說 :「 天 !是 這 麼 大 、 這 麼 高 ,有 一 天 塌 下 來 , 沒地 方 逃 怎 麼 辦 呢 ?」 從 此 每 天 為 此 發 愁 、煩 惱 , 而 吃 不 好 , 也 睡 不 好 。A long time ago, in the country of Chi, there was a cowardly man who is always worrying aboutsomething that no one else ever thought about. He always asked some bizarre questions thatperplexed everyone.One day, he sat in front of the door with a fan in his hand and said to himself.” Our Sky! Is so hugeand high. What if one day, it fell? There’s no place to hide.” Ever since that day, he worried aboutthe sky falling. He couldn’t eat well nor sleep tight.48

朋 友 知 道 原杞人憂天因 後 , 便 跑 來 勸他 說 :「 老 兄 啊 !天 怎 麼 會 塌 下 來呢 ? 就 算 塌 下 來 , 也 有 高 山 擋 著 , 不 是 你憂 慮 發 愁 就 可 以 解 決 的 啊 !」聽 完 後 他 稍 微 放 心 一 點 , 接 著 又 想 如果 是 日 月 星 辰 掉 下 來 , 又 怎 麼 辦 ? 仍 然 為了 不 必 要 的 問 題 在 擔 憂 。After his friends learned about his worries, they counseled him, “My friend, there is no way the skywill fall. And even if it did, there are mountains that can hold it for you. There’s nothing you cando about it anyway, so stop worrying!”He felt a little bit relieved after what they said. But thenhe thought, “What if the sun, the moon, or even thestar start to fall? What should I do then?” So he stillthinks about those kind of weird situation and keepsworrying every day.49

寓 意 :本 指 杞 國 有 人 為 了 天 會 塌 下 來 , 不 知 道 要躲 到 那 裏 , 煩 惱 到 廢 寢 忘 食 的 地 步 。 引杞人憂天申 - 形 容 不 必 要 的 操 心 及 多 餘 的 憂 慮 。Nowadays, the proverb is used on people who worry about odd disasters that have little chance ofcoming true, whose fears far outweighs the actual danger.50

寓 言 故 事一 鳴 驚 人戰 國 時 齊 國 有 位 淳一鳴驚人于 髡 , 個 子 矮 小 , 十分 滑 稽 並 且 善 於 辯論 。 所 以 , 每 次 出使 到 其 他 諸 侯 的領 土 上 , 從 來 沒 有 受 過 屈 辱 。當 時 齊 威 王 每 天 沉 溺 在 飲 酒 作 樂 、 荒廢 朝 政 的 日 子 , 可 是 卻 沒 有 人 敢 進 諫 。 淳于 髡 知 道 齊 王 喜 歡 猜 謎 , 便 說 :「 我 們 國In the Warring States period, there was a small and funny looking man named Chunyu Kun. Hewas an eloquent and persuasive speaker. He skillfully advised the king on many occasions andsuccessfully went to many states as an envoy.At that time, King Qi Wei didn’t pay any attention to governing his country. He filled his days withworldly pleasures. No one dared to protest to King Qi Wei about what he has been doing.Chunyu Kun knew that King Qi Wei enjoyed riddles, so he said to the king, “There is a big birdliving inside our kingdom and it’s been three years since it has flown or sung. Do you know whatkind of bird is it?”51

家 的 王 宮 裡 , 住 著 一 隻 大 鳥 , 三 年 了 牠 不飛 也 不 叫 , 大 王 知 道 這 是 什 麼 鳥 嗎 ?」齊 威 王 便 回 答 :「 這 隻 鳥 啊 ! 不 飛 則一鳴驚人已 , 一 飛 沖 天 ; 不 鳴 則 已 , 一 鳴 驚 人 」。後 來 齊 王 改 變 作 風 , 開 始 整 頓 國 政 ,不 僅 對 各 地 官 員 賞 罰 分 明 , 甚 至 將 一 些 諸侯 以 前 搶 奪 的 領 土 都 給 拿 回 來 了 。After hearing this statement, King Qi Wei understood Chunyu Kun’s meaning, and replied, “It is abird that it either doesn’t fly at all or flies like a rocket; it either doesn’t make a sound or sings soloud that it will startle everyone.”After that, King Qi Wei changed the way he lived.He started to manage the government, and hedid a very good job at it Not only did he giveout proper rewards and punishments to theofficials and ministers, but he also tookback unregistered land that were stolen bythe dukes before.52

一鳴驚人寓 意 :指 忽 然 做 出 一 件 讓 人 吃 驚 的 事 情 並 且 成功 。 比 喻 平 時 默 默 無 聞 , 一 旦 要 有 所 作為 , 便 有 驚 人 的 表 現 。The meaning of this story is that one should stay silent and prepare oneself for the when he is readyto stand center stage and show the world what he can do.53

寓 言 故 事李 代 桃 僵本 句 成 語 出 自 樂 府 詩 集 中 的 詩 句「 桃 生 露 井 上 , 李 樹 生 桃 旁 ; 蟲 來 嚙 桃根 , 李 樹 代 桃 僵 。 樹 木 身 相 代 , 兄 弟 還 相李代桃僵忘 !」。詩 的 大 意 是 說 :井 邊 有 一 棵 桃 樹 , 桃 樹 的 旁 邊 有 一 棵李 樹 。54

有 一 天 , 有 害 蟲 來 吃 桃 樹 的 根 , 李 樹李代桃僵雖 然 沒 有 被 蟲 咬 到 , 但 是 卻 為 了 桃 樹 而 著急 、 難 過 , 最 後 甚 至 僵 硬 枯 死 了 。像 桃 李 這 樣 的 樹 木 都 會 互 相 同 情 及 親愛 , 甚 至 用 自 己 的 生 命 去 代 替 受 罪 , 那 同胞 兄 弟 之 間 還 能 夠 把 手 足 之 情 給 忘 掉 嗎 ?This proverb comes from a poem. There is a peach tree by a well, and a plum tree next to it. Oneday, bugs come to gnaw at the root of the peach tree. Although plum tree was unharmed; it worriedso much about the peach tree that it eventually died. If even trees care about and love other trees,why can’t people care about and love each other?55

寓 意 :本 來 是 用 桃 李 的 「 患 難 與 共 」 來 比 喻 兄 弟之 間 的 互 助 及 友 愛 , 後 來 被 人 們 用 來 形 容李代桃僵彼 此 頂 替 或 代 人 受 過 的 意 思 。The story was used to describe the love between siblings. But the meaning was later changed todescribe how one helps another by taking on all the punishment and suffering onto himself/herself.56
