Dur<strong>in</strong>g the time of herpost-repatriation imprisonment, her son hadmade it from Yanbian Ch<strong>in</strong>a to South <strong>Korea</strong>.Us<strong>in</strong>g his government resettlement grant andemployment <strong>in</strong>come, he hired a <strong>Korea</strong>n-Ch<strong>in</strong>eseagent to search <strong>for</strong> his mother, and br<strong>in</strong>g her toSeoul. Mrs. Bang could not yet walk, but withher son’s money she bought food and medic<strong>in</strong>eto restore her health. By October, she was ableto travel. On October 27, she bribed a borderguard and crossed aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>to Ch<strong>in</strong>a. In November2003, she sought refuge <strong>in</strong> the South <strong>Korea</strong>nEmbassy <strong>in</strong> Beij<strong>in</strong>g. On January 8, 2004 shecame to Seoul. At the Hanawon orientationcenter <strong>for</strong> <strong>North</strong> <strong>Korea</strong>n refugees newly resettled<strong>in</strong> South <strong>Korea</strong>, she met another defectorwhom she married. Reunited with her children,she now lives just outside Seoul with her newhusband. She is hop<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>for</strong>m an NGO toassist <strong>North</strong> <strong>Korea</strong>n women trafficked <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a.WITNESS: Yoo Chun-shikKyo-hwa-so No. “Two-Two,” SouthHamgyong Prov<strong>in</strong>ceMr. Yoo Chun-shik was born <strong>in</strong> November 1963<strong>in</strong> Onsong, <strong>North</strong> Hamgyong Prov<strong>in</strong>ce. Follow<strong>in</strong>gcompletion of his military service, <strong>in</strong> which heheld the rank of platoon commander, he worked<strong>for</strong> a construction company <strong>in</strong> Onsong. His longstr<strong>in</strong>g of encounters with the <strong>North</strong> <strong>Korea</strong>n prisonand detention system began <strong>in</strong> 1996.After food distribution ceased at his place ofemployment, Yoo went to Kangwon Prov<strong>in</strong>ceto buy fish to sell to <strong>Korea</strong>ns <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a. He made“good money” and also began buy<strong>in</strong>g personaleffects and sell<strong>in</strong>g them <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a. Caught bythe <strong>North</strong> <strong>Korea</strong>n police, he was sentenced<strong>in</strong> January 1996 to six months’ hard labor atthe Onsong An-jeon-bu People’s Safety Agencyro-dong-dan-ryeon-dae labor tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g camp. Hissentence was <strong>for</strong> not work<strong>in</strong>g at his designatedworkplace, <strong>for</strong> unauthorized buy<strong>in</strong>g and sell<strong>in</strong>g,and <strong>for</strong> an old assault they dredged up from hismilitary record. (Mr. Yoo th<strong>in</strong>ks he would havebeen given a longer sentence if not <strong>for</strong> his militaryservice record.)In May 1995, with one month left to go <strong>in</strong> hissix-month sentence, Yoo was given a temporaryholiday release. But he became <strong>in</strong>ebriated dur<strong>in</strong>gthe holiday festivities and was late return<strong>in</strong>gto the labor-tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g camp.
