She againfled to China, and arrived in South Korea inDecember 2007.Witness and Testimony: FormerDetainee # 35Refouled at Onsong, 2007Born in 1979 in the Musan district of NorthHamgyong province, Former Detainee # 35went to China in May 1998 to find his motherand sister who had fled to China a year earlier.But unable to locate his family, as a loyal citizen,he returned to North Korea to vote in theelection for the Supreme People’s Assembly.En route back home, he was caught by a securityagent in Musan in August of 1998. Underinterrogation at the Musan Bo-wi-bu ku-ryu-janginterrogation-detention facility, he was beatenwith wooden poles if he failed to answer questions“correctly.”Because of overcrowding at the Musan Bo-wi-bupolice station, he was sent to a Musan Ro-dongdan-ryeon-daemobile labor brigade for ten days inOctober 1998. There, he and the other prisonerswere subjected to an intensely demanding laborproject demolishing an iron reinforced concretebuilding with hammers, leaving his handscovered with blisters. Severely underfed, hesuffered from constant hunger. During and aftertheir “meal” of corn gruel, the detainees had tosing patriotic songs and shout out propagandaslogans. The worst though were the freezing cold,blanket-less nights as he was still wearing onlythe summer clothes he had on coming back fromChina. At the mobile labor brigade, he observeda pregnant woman being taunted about her“Chinese seed” for her unborn child, whom theynamed “Kim Cho (North Korea)-joong(China),”before forcing her to abort the half-Chinesebaby. Former Detainee # 35 saw other pregnantwomen beaten by the guards as well.Released from the mobile labor brigade in April1999, he went back to China again in search ofhis mother and sister. Through an acquaintancefrom his first visit to China, he found his familyand lived in China for eight years without gettingcaught, even taking a Chinese wife in 2002.
