Longstanding <strong>KBA</strong> customer<br />

Oceano in Brazil is expanding capacity<br />

with two identical heatset<br />

Comet presses. One will be installed<br />

this summer at Oceano’s facility<br />

in Cajamar near São Paulo, the<br />

other in the autumn at Oceano Sul<br />

down south in Criciúma. Oceano,<br />

which is part of fast-growing Brazilian<br />

print media major Grupo Escala<br />

founded in 1992, already runs two<br />

16pp Compacta 215 and two 48pp<br />

Compacta 618 press lines in Cajamar<br />

and a further two 16pp Compactas<br />

in Criciúma.<br />

Since 1996 group founder Hercilio<br />

de Lourenzi has regularly<br />

invested in new <strong>KBA</strong> web and<br />

sheetfed presses. Today Oceano employs<br />

around 500 staff and prints<br />

over 200 magazine titles a month.<br />

It also prints telephone directories,<br />

a business publication, Brasil Economico,<br />

and numerous advertising<br />

supplements for chain stores such<br />

as Walmart, Pão de Açucar and Carrefour.<br />

More than 3,000 tonnes<br />

(3,300 US tons) of paper and over<br />

70 tonnes (74 tons) of ink are consumed<br />

each month. Magazine titles<br />

include the Brazilian editions of<br />

L.N. Schaffrath orders new commercial press from <strong>KBA</strong><br />

Bucking the recession, major German<br />

media provider L.N. Schaffrath<br />

in Geldern am Niederrhein<br />

recently signed up for a capacityand<br />

productivity-boosting 16pp<br />

commercial web offset press from<br />

<strong>KBA</strong>. Schaffrath, whose customers<br />

include a raft of prominent publishing<br />

houses, offers a complete range<br />

of services from concept, design<br />

and layout to print production and<br />

distribution. At present its primary<br />

focus is on periodicals, magazines<br />

and supplements, but it is keen to<br />

expand its offerings still further.<br />

The new press line will join a fleet<br />

of web and sheetfed presses in a<br />

modern, well-equipped production<br />

plant.<br />

Founded over 250 years ago in<br />

1743, Schaffrath, which is also<br />

known as Schaffrath DruckMedien,<br />

employs some 300 staff and in<br />

2009 posted sales exceeding €43m<br />

Vogue and Vogue Homme, a popular<br />

Brazilian title, Corpo a Corpo,<br />

a lifestyle magazine, Tempo, plus<br />

diverse special-interest titles and<br />

comics.<br />

The 75,000cph Comets will<br />

mainly print Brasil Economico, supplements<br />

and flyers. Both floormounted<br />

presses will have a<br />

cylinder circumference of 1156mm<br />

(45.5in) and the ability to handle<br />

any web width between 630 and<br />

in day-to-day management.<br />

The press line will comprise<br />

four double printing units with a<br />

620mm (24.5in) cut-off and a maximum<br />

web width of 1000mm<br />

(39.37in). Its advanced level of automation<br />

will extend from reel logistics<br />

with Patras A, including reel<br />

loading and reel-stub ejection in<br />

the Pastomat C reelstand, to plate<br />

changing with PlateTronic and fast<br />

conversion of the P3 folder to support<br />

high-speed job changes. The infeed<br />

unit with its environmentally<br />

friendly regenerative braking system<br />

will be integrated in the reelstand<br />

to save space. Shaftless drives<br />

throughout will ease operation and<br />

trim makeready times. Other kit<br />

will include closed-loop colorimetry,<br />

cut-off register controls and a<br />

Contiweb hot-air dryer.<br />

Shorts<br />

1000mm (24.85 - 39.37in). Each<br />

will be configured with a Pastoline<br />

reelstand linked to a Patras M manual<br />

reel-handling system, and will<br />

comprise one four-high tower for<br />

4/4 with bustle wheels, colour-register<br />

controls and automatic cylinder<br />

washing. In addition to the<br />

heatset package with hot-air dryer<br />

and chill-roller stand, press specifications<br />

include a double turner bar<br />

with one former in the superstruc-<br />

ture, a KF 3 jaw folder with semicommercial<br />

capability, a quarterfold<br />

facility and gluing, perforating and<br />

stitching devices for greater product<br />

versatility. Cut-off register, webedge<br />

and web-centre controls will<br />

ensure a high standard of quality<br />

and productivity. The press lines<br />

will be controlled from high-tech<br />

consoles complete with production<br />

scheduling software and RIP interface.<br />

The ErgoTronic control console<br />

will be supplemented by a convenient<br />

operating display panel at the<br />

folder. LogoTronic Professional production<br />

management software will<br />

capture and store operating and job<br />

data for press preset and rapid conversion<br />

to both new and repeat<br />

jobs. EasyTronic and its one-button<br />

control will shorten start-up and<br />

slowdown times while minimising<br />

waste.<br />
