Why use YARC Primary?
• YARC Primary: Complete Set offers a continuous and
seamless assessment of reading from age 4 to 11,
providing a remarkable amount of diagnostic information
• It has been developed by the Centre for Reading and Language at the
University of York, one of the UK’s leading centres for research into the
nature and causes of reading and language difficulties
• It is ideal as a follow-up assessment at individual level, for those pupils
who are identified as requiring further intervention after group testing
• The tests in the Early Reading suite are especially useful for identifying
underlying difficulties in phonological awareness and the acquisition of

YARC Primary in our portfolio
YARC Primary is an ideal follow-up assessment to the New
Group Reading Test (NGRT) (pages 24–27). Whilst NGRT
screens and monitors the reading ability of pupils on a group level
to identify those with potential difficulties, YARC Primary will
enable you to carry out and in-depth, individual assessment of a
pupil’s decoding and comprehension skills. A wealth of invaluable
diagnostic information on a pupil’s reading skills can be used to
inform timely and appropriate intervention strategies.
YARC Primary is particularly useful in identifying a pupil’s eligibility
for additional time for Access Arrangements at Key Stage 2,
Combining YARC Primary with the British Picture Vocabulary
Scale: 3rd Edition (page 34), provides a quick and easy
assessment of vocabulary, an element essential to success in
reading.
YARC Primary is also particularly useful when combined with our
Dyslexia Portfolio (page 54), to identify pupils who are
displaying the signs of dyslexia, so that measures can be put in
place quickly to support their achievement in literacy.
