The test can be used to assess accuracy, fluency and comprehension and offers qualitative information about students’ inferencing skills. YARC Secondary comprises a series of prose passages – both fiction and non-fiction and can be used to assess and monitor student progress, which in turn allows the identification of reading problems. It may also be used as part of a comprehensive diagnostic assessment for education planning, for benchmarking your pupils’ reading and has a role to play in assessing the eligibility for Access Arrangements for national examinations such as GCSEs. A version of GL Assessment Single Word Reading Test (SWRT) is also part of the assessment. This can be administered in just a couple of minutes to determine which passage to give to an individual student, ensuring the assessment remains targeted and time-efficient. The test also includes two supplementary passages that are at an easier level for students who are still experiencing decoding difficulties. The test takes only 20-30 minutes to administer and from this a remarkable amount of valuable information can be gathered, including standard scores, age equivalent scores and percentile ranks for comprehension, rate and fluency. YARC Score Conversion Tool YARC Secondary comes with a free online Score Conversion Tool that allows teachers to input student details and raw scores and instantly receive a single page report with standard scores, age equivalent scores and percentile ranks for each part of YARC Secondary that has be administered. LITERACY Why use YARC Secondary? • YARC Secondary assesses the essential components of reading, providing valuable diagnostic insight into a student’s ability • It has been developed by the Centre for Reading and Language at the University of York, one of the UK’s leading centres for research into the nature and causes of reading and language difficulties • It is an appropriate assessment post- and pre- intervention offering an independent, objective assessment of effectiveness • YARC Secondary is an ideal tool for assessing reading (decoding) and comprehension skills in students with English as an Additional Language (EAL) • Separate scores are provided for summarisation and comprehension enabling you to examine profiles of strengths and weaknesses • It is ideal for Access Arrangements for GCSE and other national examinations a complete approach YARC Secondary in our portfolio YARC Secondary is an ideal follow-up assessment to the New Group Reading Test (NGRT) (pages 24–27). Whilst NGRT screens and monitors the reading ability of students on a group level to identify those with potential difficulties, YARC Secondary will enable you to carry out an in-depth, individual assessment of a student’s reading accuracy, fluency and comprehension skills across the secondary phase. The wealth of valuable diagnostic information provided by YARC Secondary can be used to inform timely and appropriate intervention strategies. Access Arrangements refer to the accommodations made by examination boards for students with special <strong>educational</strong> needs (SEN) and disabilities. Specific arrangements depend upon the nature and severity of the student’s difficulties. YARC Secondary is an ideal tool for assessing Access Arrangements for GCSE examinations at Key Stage 4. It provides a number of measures for this purpose: reading accuracy (Single Word Reading Test), reading rate (Passage Reading) and reading fluency (Reading Fluency). Like YARC Primary, YARC Secondary sits particularly well with our Dyslexia Portfolio (page 54) to identify pupils who are showing signs of dyslexia.
