Tiger Woods may prove to be the best professional<br />

golfer in history. Although he is not yet thirty, he is<br />

already well on track to break Jack Nicklaus’s record of<br />

eighteen career victories in professional majors. In a<br />

sport where victory is often decided by only one or two<br />

strokes, Woods has had several double-digit wins. Because<br />

of his domination of the game, and perhaps also<br />

because he is a young minority in a sport that had previously<br />

featured mostly white, middle-aged stars, Woods<br />

has achieved a popularity that extends far beyond typical<br />

golf fans.<br />

A Golfing Toddler<br />

Woods has been playing golf since he could walk, and<br />

studying the game even longer. His father, Earl Woods, a<br />

retired Army officer, took up golf only a year before<br />

Woods was born, but he quickly fell in love with the<br />

sport. Earl set up a miniature driving range in his garage
