When end-rhymed songs emerged in Estonia in the 18th century,<br />

the songs spread from one person to another, but today the<br />

most important mediator of music – that of local origin, from<br />

the neighbours and from the West – is the music industry.<br />

From the viewpoint of folklore the massmedia mediates a<br />

song to the human mind and acts as the teacher of a tradition.<br />

The Norwegian folklorist Torunn Selberg has claimed that media<br />

and folklore are opposite poles that can nevertheless have<br />

influence on one another. “Folklore is in ideal direct communication<br />
