When end-rhymed songs emerged in Estonia in the 18th century,
the songs spread from one person to another, but today the
most important mediator of music – that of local origin, from
the neighbours and from the West – is the music industry.
From the viewpoint of folklore the massmedia mediates a
song to the human mind and acts as the teacher of a tradition.
The Norwegian folklorist Torunn Selberg has claimed that media
and folklore are opposite poles that can nevertheless have
