our Campuses The heritage-listed Foundation Building at UQ Gatton UQ GATTON UQ Gatton delivers excellence in agricultural and natural resource sciences. UQ Gatton offers a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and you will enjoy the benefits of being close to the major centres of Brisbane, Ipswich and Toowoomba. Just over an hour’s drive west of Brisbane, the campus offers a unique blend of modern teaching facilities, wellequipped laboratories, and historic buildings. As a UQ Gatton student you will gain a more personalised education while still being part of a large university with international standing. The campus is home to several world-class facilities including: – Centre for Advanced Animal Science – UQ Veterinary Medical Centre – Veterinary Clinical Skills and Research Facility – modern Pre-Clinical Teaching Laboratories – Native Wildlife Teaching and Research Facility – climate-controlled research greenhouse – Pesticide Wind Tunnel Research Facility. The campus also operates commercial production units to support teaching, research and hands-on training. The programs offered in the areas of agribusiness and economics, agriculture and horticulture, animals and equine studies, environment, food, natural resources and veterinary science are internationally recognised as among the best of their types in Australia. Take advantage of UQ Gatton’s range of medical, welfare, counselling and learning support services, and its numerous sporting and recreational activities. Campus amenities include a post office, childcare centre, bookshop, café, banking facilities, and a licensed club. You can also live on-campus if you wish (see page 23). Lockyer Valley Shire Gatton is a thriving town of 16,000 people in the Lockyer Valley, just five kilometres from UQ Gatton and 90 kilometres west of Brisbane. Toowoomba, a city of 155,000 people, is the regional capital of the Darling Downs and is a 30-minute drive away. The picturesque landscape includes rich farming land, and tourist attractions such as hot-air ballooning, horse-riding, and antiquefossicking. Gatton offers many services and facilities, including supermarkets and shops, accommodation, visitors’ information centre, a hospital and other medical services, a civic centre, restaurants, banks, public library, recreational facilities, a showground, golf course, and football club. Transport During semester, the University-operated express bus service runs four times each weekday, from UQ St Lucia to UQ Ipswich, then UQ Gatton and return. Express coaches run between Brisbane and Toowoomba, and a bus/rail service links Gatton and Brisbane. You will also find ample free, on-campus parking all year. THE UQ EXPERIENCE UQ HERSTON Herston is UQ’s core campus for clinical health teaching and research. Close to Brisbane’s CBD, the campus is located alongside the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH). UQ Herston is home to the School of Medicine, the School of Population Health, the School of Nursing and Midwifery’s research activities, and the Faculty of Health Sciences office. (Health Sciences Schools and facilities can also be found at UQ St Lucia, UQ Ipswich, and other major hospitals.) Co-locating UQ Herston with a major teaching hospital demonstrates UQ’s commitment to working closely with health professionals and researchers in Queensland to deliver innovative and contemporary education programs. As a student, you will benefit from this integration into the Herston hospital precinct, which also includes several major medical research centres. The newly renovated Health Sciences Building in the heart of the hospital provides you with advanced learning facilities, including mock hospital wards, rooms for clinical bedside coaching and group work, and a unique pathology learning centre with Australia’s largest range of human specimens. The Herston Health Sciences Library is another valuable information resource. UQ Herston also houses: – UQ Centre for Clinical Research – Centre for Military and Veterans Health – Centre for Online Health – Australian Centre for International and Tropical Health and Nutrition (ACITHN) – Centre for Indigenous Health – Queensland Children’s Medical Research Institute. Transport Travel to UQ Herston by public transport is easy. Bus stops are located on Herston Road, near the RCH, and on Bowen Bridge Road near the RBWH.
