where to live UQ can help you find somewhere to live, and give you ongoing support to help make the move to Brisbane as smooth as possible. AIRPORT RECEPTION AND TEMPORARY ACCOMMODATION UQ representatives will meet all newly arrived international students at the domestic or international airports. This free service is only available to international students commencing their first semester. You must book at least five days in advance via the Accommodation Services website. Our Accommodation Services can also arrange temporary accommodation, if required, and can help you find more permanent accommodation on arrival. INFORMATION SESSIONS Accommodation Services provides free daily information sessions at the start of each semester. These sessions provide you with the tools required to successfully find and keep a tenancy. We highly recommend that you attend a session before entering a tenancy agreement. On-campus residential colleges More than 2350 students live on-campus in the 10 residential colleges at UQ St Lucia. Colleges generally provide individual bedrooms (usually with shared bathrooms), meals, laundry facilities, and common social and recreation spaces. They may also offer academic tutorials, pastoral care and religious observance. Cromwell College (Campus Lodge) and International House provide self-catered accommodation for postgraduate and matureaged students. Colleges accept all applications, regardless of students’ religious affiliations or views; however, some give priority to students committed to the college ethos. On-campus accommodation is in high demand. To avoid disappointment, you should apply directly to the college you wish to live in as soon as you have received your UQ offer. You can get an application form directly from the colleges or via the Accommodation Services website. You should consider a second option in case college accommodation is not available. For details, see the table on page 24. Off-campus student housing Many independent, commercial companies provide student accommodation for UQ with a variety of purpose-built and managed housing for students. These combine the advantages of residing in a student community with the freedom of self-catered housing. They provide appropriate, well-located accommodation that complies with all relevant state legislation. If you plan to live alone, you will have a choice of studio or single bedroom apartments. If you prefer to live with a group of friends you may want a two- or three-bedroom unit. Some unit complexes include swimming pools, gymnasiums and communal recreational areas, while others provide more basic facilities suitable for students with smaller budgets. You can apply for and book this type of accommodation directly with the provider before starting your UQ degree program. For a list of providers please see the Accommodation Services website at www.accommodation.uq.edu.au Off-campus rental housing Share houses and apartments are the most common form of student housing, allowing you to save on costs and develop friendships. Houses are generally shared by three or more students, with weekly rent ranging from about AUD$175 to AUD$200 per person. Apartments are usually smaller and are shared by two or more people, depending on apartment size and personal preferences. Weekly rent ranges from about AUD$190 to AUD$250 per person. The UQ Rentals Online website lists vacant rental accommodation for UQ students (see page 23). However, we strongly advise that rental housing only be arranged once you have arrived in Brisbane. Most students interested in rental accommodation will book airport reception and temporary accommodation (see left), then look for long-term rental housing during their first few days in Brisbane. Please note: – houses and units (also called flats or apartments) are usually rented (leased) for six or 12-month periods – initial costs can be high – payment of two weeks rent in advance, plus a bond equivalent to four weeks rent – security deposits for gas, electricity and phone connections may be required – houses are generally rented unfurnished – furnished or part-furnished houses and apartments are available, but rent is higher – you must budget for food, household items, and ongoing utility costs such as gas, electricity and telephone (see page 88). 22 UNDERGRADUATE PROSPECTUS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS 2012
THE UQ EXPERIENCE UQ Ipswich Students studying at UQ Ipswich can live in student accommodation close to campus, or rent houses or units in surrounding suburbs. On-campus residential college accommodation is not available. Off-campus student housing Two independent providers offer student accommodation adjacent to the campus. One features a complex of five-bedroom, fully furnished, self-catering units where you can rent a single bedroom and share facilities with four other flatmates. The other has single, study bedrooms with shared dining and recreational facilities. You can choose from fully catered, partially catered, or self-catered options. A third independent provider offers self-catering accommodation in an apartment complex located in central Ipswich, which is within easy walking distance of campus. You should apply online in advance. Find out more about off-campus student housing at the Accommodation Services website. Off-campus rental housing Please refer to the Accommodation Services website for further information. Residential college students UQ Gatton UQ Gatton offers a variety of accommodation options, including on-campus colleges and houses, off-campus student accommodation, or rental accommodation in townships nearby. On-campus residential colleges Three non-denominational Halls of Residence accommodate up to 350 students at UQ Gatton. The Halls provide a caring environment with academic support plus cultural, social and sporting activities. Senior students and staff help with study, and social and personal welfare matters. You have an excellent chance of obtaining on-campus accommodation but need to contact Hall staff to confirm places before arrival. Accommodation is offered on an academic year basis (excluding vacation periods) with fees due in advance. All meals are included. Senior students can elect to stay in one of the self-catered blocks. Please contact the Halls of Residence to apply. For details, refer to the table on page 24. On-campus houses You may choose to stay in one of the selfcontained on-campus houses managed by UQ Accommodation Services. You can rent a room in a fully furnished share house that accommodates up to four people. You will be allocated your own room but will share a bathroom, kitchen, and lounge room facilities. Alternatively, you can rent an entire house for The Gatton Halls of Residence yourself and your family. Houses can be rented furnished or unfurnished subject to availability. If you live on-campus at Gatton you will also have the option of purchasing meal packages. For further information, please contact Accommodation Services. UQ Herston If you are studying at UQ Herston, you may choose to rent a house or unit in the St John’s College surrounding suburbs. Alternatively, you can live in an on-campus residential college at UQ St Lucia and commute to UQ Herston for your studies. Find out more at the Accommodation Services website.
