Diplomas
At UQ, you can study an undergraduate
diploma concurrently with your bachelor
degree. You may choose to undertake the
diploma over an accelerated period, or spread
the load across the duration of your degree.
If you are interested in the Diploma in Music
or the Diploma in Languages, you can apply for
these programs directly to UQ once you have
been offered a place at UQ. If you are interested
in the Diploma in Global Issues, you will need
to complete a year (16 units) of undergraduate
studies before applying.
Bachelor degrees
Bachelor degrees usually require between three
and five years of full-time study. They provide
systematic introductions to specific fields of
study. You will develop an in-depth knowledge
of the content, understanding of underlying
principles and concepts, and problem-solving
and analytical skills.
Bachelor degrees can contain compulsory
courses and elective courses, often depending
on the major. See pages 35-80.
Dual programs
Dual programs (or degrees) enable you to
study for two degrees at the same time. A
dual program gives you the flexibility to study
several areas of interest at once. The additional
knowledge and skills gained will give you
a competitive edge in the workforce, and
significantly broaden your career possibilities.
Dual programs can also be completed more
quickly than two separate degrees. See page
92 for more information.
Majors
A major, extended major, or dual major is an
area of specialised study within a program. It
may be compulsory to undertake a major while
completing a program.
Courses (subjects)
A course is a distinct unit of study within
a program. Each course is identified by its
alphanumeric code, a title, and a fixed unit
value. Courses are usually completed in one or
two semesters.
Honours
If you are undertaking a three-year bachelor
degree, you must complete additional study
to be considered for honours. For four- and
five-year bachelor degrees, honours is awarded
based on your academic performance during
the program.
Honours is awarded at different levels
(Honours I, Honours IIA, Honours IIB or
Honours III). Honours IIA or better is usually the
minimum requirement for entry into a Doctor of
Philosophy (PhD) program, and Honours II or
better is usually the minimum entry requirement
for a Masters of Philosophy (MPhil) program.
Commencement
See the inside front cover for the complete
2012 academic calendar.
In 2012, Semester 1 will commence on
27 February, and Semester 2 will commence on
23 July. Programs with earlier commencement
dates are noted in the Academic Programs
information on pages 35-80.
Full-time study
A standard load is eight units (#8) per semester.
Full-time study is defined as 75% or more of
the standard full-time load for a program (i.e.
enrolled in at least six units per semester, or
three to four courses, for most programs).
International students must complete their
studies in the minimum program duration (this
normally equates to eight units per semester).
