Organization and Armament<br />

1001. General<br />

Themission of the rifle squad is to locate, close with, and destroy the enem<br />

by fire and maneuver, or repel the enemy's assault by fire and close combat.<br />

1002. Organization of the <strong>Rifle</strong> <strong>Squad</strong><br />

The rifle squad consists of three fire teams, each of which is built around<br />

an automatic weapon and controlledby a fire team leader.<br />

1003. Composition of the <strong>Rifle</strong> <strong>Squad</strong><br />

The squad is composed of 13 men: a sergeant (squad leader) and three fire<br />

teams of four men each. Each fire team consists of a corporal (fire team<br />

leader/grenadier), two lance corporals (automatic rifleman and assistant automatic<br />

rifleman), and a private or private first class (rifleman). (See fig. 1-1.)<br />

1004. Weapons<br />

a. Organic Weapons. Theorganic weapons of the squad are as follows:<br />

(1) <strong>Squad</strong> Leader. M-16 rifle and bayonet knife.<br />

(2) Fire Team Leader/Grenadier. M-16 rifle with a 40 mm, M-203 grenade<br />

launcher attached and bayonet knife.<br />

(3) Automatic <strong>Rifle</strong>man. <strong>Squad</strong> automaticweapon (SAW) and combat<br />

knife (K-bar).<br />

(4) Assistant Automatic <strong>Rifle</strong>man. M-16 rifle and bayonet knife.<br />

(5) <strong>Rifle</strong>man. M-16 rifle and bayonet knife.<br />
