Chapter 1 Organization and Armament 1001. General Themission of the rifle squad is to locate, close with, and destroy the enem by fire and maneuver, or repel the enemy's assault by fire and close combat. 1002. Organization of the Rifle Squad The rifle squad consists of three fire teams, each of which is built around an automatic weapon and controlledby a fire team leader. 1003. Composition of the Rifle Squad The squad is composed of 13 men: a sergeant (squad leader) and three fire teams of four men each. Each fire team consists of a corporal (fire team leader/grenadier), two lance corporals (automatic rifleman and assistant automatic rifleman), and a private or private first class (rifleman). (See fig. 1-1.) 1004. Weapons a. Organic Weapons. Theorganic weapons of the squad are as follows: (1) Squad Leader. M-16 rifle and bayonet knife. (2) Fire Team Leader/Grenadier. M-16 rifle with a 40 mm, M-203 grenade launcher attached and bayonet knife. (3) Automatic Rifleman. Squad automaticweapon (SAW) and combat knife (K-bar). (4) Assistant Automatic Rifleman. M-16 rifle and bayonet knife. (5) Rifleman. M-16 rifle and bayonet knife. 1.1
