g. CS grenades can be employed to rout enemy defenders. Use of CS must
be well thought out as it affects both friendly and enemy personnel. The
use of CS should be addressed in the platoon or squad leader's order prior
to any attack.
h. The search party moves to the building on a covered and concealed route
using smoke grenades or smoke pots for additional concealment. The search
party enters the building at the highest level possible, because —
• The ground floor and basement are usually more strongly defended.
• Windows and doors on the ground floor and in the basement are usually
boobytrapped.
• The roof of a building is normally weaker than the walls.
• It is easier to fight down stairs than up stairs.
i. Care must be taken in using hand grenades.
(1) Evaluate the construction of the exterior and interior walls of a building
before using hand grenades. If the walls, especially interior walls,
are of light construction, you can become a casualty of your own grenade.
When using hand grenades inside a building, take cover behind sturdy
furniture.
(2) Don't throw hand grenades upstairs.
(3) After releasing the safety lever (spoon), throw it into rooms
vigorously. It will ricochet around the room and deny the enemy the
opportunity to throw it back.
j. Rifle rounds will penetrate most interior walls. Be sure you know who
is on the other side of a wall you fire at.
k. Extreme care must be taken in the employment of the M-203 when
fighting in a built-up area. The following characteristics of the M-203 must
be considered.
(1) The M-203 using the HE or HE airburst round is ideal for use by
the covering team to deliver explosive ordnance into the upper levels of
a building before the search team enters.
