Reporting Information<br />

1. General. Informationmust be reported quickly, accurately, and as completely<br />

as possible. The acronym SALUTE provides a simple method for<br />

remembering how and what to report about the enemy.<br />

An example of such a report is "Seven enemy soldiers, traveling SW, crossed<br />

road junction on Black Ridge at 211300 August. They were wearing green<br />

uniforms and carrying one machine gun and one rocket launcher."<br />

2. Shelling Reports (SHELREP). The squad should report enemy artillery<br />

and mortar fire, and aircraft bombings using a SHELREP. The following<br />

format is suitable for either a written or oral report:<br />

Alfa<br />

Bravo<br />

Charlie<br />

Delta<br />

Echo<br />

Foxtrot<br />

Golf<br />

Hotel<br />

India<br />

Juliet<br />

Kilo<br />

Observer's call sign.<br />

Observer's location.<br />

Azimuth to enemy gun.<br />

Time shelling started.<br />

Time shelling stopped.<br />

Coordinates of area shelled, if a map is available.<br />

Number and types of weapons fired.<br />

Nature of fire: destruction, harassing, or registration.<br />

Number and type of shells.<br />

Flash-bang time in seconds.<br />

Damage (usually in code).<br />

3. Estimating Range by the Flash-Bang Method. Sound travels about<br />

330 meters (1,100 feet) per second. When the observer sees the flash or smoke of<br />

a weapon, or the dust it raises, he starts counting seconds (one thousand one,<br />
