Welcome to our <strong>Nov</strong>ember issue, how the months fly by with Christmas<br />
just round the corner!<br />
Once again the Community section is brimming with local news and<br />
reflects the great sense of community spirit shared by so many local<br />
residents.<br />
Rochdale resident, Margaret Corns, has written a fascinating article on<br />
the work currently underway to reveal the River Roch. Using photographs<br />
from the early 1900’s, she reflects on the way the town centre used to<br />
look with the medieval bridge and the river flowing through. Margaret<br />
has been a Blue Badge Guide in Rochdale for nearly 30 years and has<br />
a wealth of historical information about the town. Look out for more<br />
articles from her as we are delighted that she has agreed to write for us<br />
on a regular basis!<br />
One date for your diary is the Whitworth Christmas Light Switch On.<br />
This will be taking place at The Riverside from 5.30pm on Sunday 22nd<br />
<strong>Nov</strong>ember where the Whitworth Vale and <strong>Healey</strong> Youth Band will be<br />
playing a selection of festive tunes and is guaranteed to get you in the<br />
Christmas spirit.<br />
Many thanks to local resident Barbara Jessop who has once again<br />
written a great feature on the wonders to be seen at this time of year<br />
as you walk through <strong>Healey</strong> Dell and the surrounding areas. She has<br />
also provided a useful list of walks currently available in the Borough.<br />
Look out for the Big Life brochure which will be published soon and<br />
which will provide up to date information on all the walks available.<br />
The final issue of this year will be the bumper December/January 2016<br />
issue so look out for this dropping through your letterbox around the<br />
second week of December.<br />

The next <strong>Shawclough</strong>/<strong>Healey</strong> Local Area Forum will be held on<br />
Thursday 28th January, 6.30pm at Syke Methodist Church,<br />
Dewhurst Road, Rochdale.<br />
If you have any issues or concerns please come along to air your<br />
views. You can help to make a difference in your community.<br />
Syke Walk and Talk Group<br />
The Syke Walk and Talk Group meet every Monday at 1.00 pm<br />
and Friday 10.00am at Syke Methodist Chapel where there will be<br />
toilet facilities and hot drinks and socialising after the walks. There<br />
are 2 levels on the walk on Monday, a high quick walk and a<br />
slower one. There are also three levels on a Friday. A high fast walk,<br />
an intermediate walk and a slower one if needed. So there is<br />
something to suit everyone and all abilities.<br />

start at 6pm in the hall, when the Whitworth Vale and<br />
<strong>Healey</strong> Youth Band will play a selection of festive tunes,<br />
and there may even be an appearance from a certain<br />
'man in a red suit'!<br />
Whitworth’s Community Carol Service will take place on<br />
Monday 14 December at 7pm at The Riverside (Civic<br />
Hall), Whitworth.<br />
The Whitworth Vale and <strong>Healey</strong> Youth Brass Band will<br />
accompany the carols throughout the evening.<br />

Revealing the Roch<br />
Work is well underway to reveal the River Roch and the historic bridge in Rochdale Town<br />
Centre. The project funded by the Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund, The Environment<br />
Agency and The Regional and Coastal Flood Committee is hoped to be completed by<br />
January 2016.<br />
The River Roch rises on Chelburn Moor, south of Todmorden and flows through Littleborough, Milnrow, Rochdale, Heywood<br />
& Bury and meets the River Irwell, east of Radcliffe.<br />
The River Roch has been important to the area from early times. Settlements developed at the river crossings and fords<br />
and there was an early ford in Rochdale near the Butts. It is thought the earliest stone bridge was built when Rochdale<br />
was granted a Market Charter in 1251 when a weekly market and annual fairs were held beside St Chad’s Church. This<br />
medieval bridge had three arches and was very narrow. It was widened many times retaining the three arch structure.<br />
The original stone medieval bridge survives today flanked by the later extensions and is<br />

a heritage asset of the greatest importance. It’s<br />
significant for its historic fabric and as a record of the<br />
town’s expansion and changing character overtime.<br />
Several foot bridges and bridges were constructed along<br />
the length of the river in the town centre to give access to<br />
both sides of the river bank as the town grew from Market<br />
to Mill town. It was decided to cover the river when it was<br />
becoming increasingly polluted with both domestic and<br />
industrial waste and when space was needed to build a<br />
tram station. This was undertaken in the following stages<br />
between 1904 and 1926:<br />
1904 – Wellington Bridge to the Walk for the Tram Station<br />
1910 – Yorkshire to Newgate<br />

This extensive covering in Ferro-Concrete gave Rochdale<br />
the acclaim in the Guinness Book of Records as having the<br />
widest bridge in the world.<br />

progress. Local Studies at Touchstones has an excellent<br />
heritage display called ‘Revealing the Roch’. Based in the<br />
Art Gallery, Touchstones, there is also an exhibition of<br />
paintings relating to the river from the borough’s collections<br />
and by students from Hopwood Hall College.<br />

Whitworth Christmas Lights<br />
Official Switch On<br />
On Sunday 22 <strong>Nov</strong>ember <strong>2015</strong>, Whitworth’s Christmas Lights will be<br />
officially switched on. Members of the public are encouraged to come to the Civic Hall<br />
(The Riverside) from 5.30pm. The proceedings start at 6pm in the hall, when the Whitworth<br />
Vale and <strong>Healey</strong> Youth Band will play a selection of<br />
festive tunes, and there may even be an<br />
appearance from a certain 'man in a red suit'!<br />
Then everyone will gather outside the hall to see<br />
the lights officially switched on by the Mayor of<br />
Whitworth, with the help of the lucky winners of<br />
the Town Council’s schools colouring<br />
competition.<br />
The Riverside will be serving a glass of mulled<br />
wine and a mince pie for a small charge, with<br />
kid’s refreshments also available. Father<br />
Christmas will be issuing sweets to the children,<br />
<strong>2015</strong> Whitworth calendars will be on sale and<br />
ducks will be available to sponsor for the New<br />
Year’s Day Duck Race.<br />
The evening is expected to draw to a natural<br />
close around 7.00pm. Entry to this event is<br />
free, and all are welcome.<br />

AUTUMN WONDERS<br />
Rochdale has had a very negative press for the last few years, but the other side of our<br />
wonderful town needs extolling.<br />
Turn off the television, close down your virtual friends, remove<br />
the earplugs that send mind numbing noise into your head and<br />
take a walk down <strong>Healey</strong> Dell.<br />
Nature is giving her annual show right now. Go and look at the<br />
trees, marvel at the fantastic colours, vibrant scarlet to luminous<br />
yellow all waiting for you to enjoy.<br />
Go and admire the superb viaduct that took the railway across<br />
the Spodden River.<br />
Wonder at the skill and workmanship that went into building of<br />
the stone work.<br />
Walk along the top of the viaduct to the<br />
old Broadley Station and look at the<br />
carved sculptures. Carry on to<br />
the pond and look at the<br />
ducks and geese. Sit<br />
quietly for a while and<br />
you may see deer,<br />
weasel or field mice<br />
and maybe even<br />
a Kingfisher.<br />
Walk along the<br />
side of the river<br />
and listen to the<br />
waterfalls. Hear the birds<br />
singing. Crunch the<br />
fallen leaves under your feet<br />
as you walk along.<br />
Smell the earthy loam that tells of autumn. Use all your senses.<br />
Mother Nature is getting ready to have a rest and turn the Dell<br />
over to the magic of winter.<br />
Rochdale has the most wonderful scenery all around the borough.<br />
No matter where you live the countryside is only a short distance<br />
away.<br />
Big Life has recently taken over the Walking for Health<br />
programme that was part of the NHS.<br />
A new brochure will be out shortly giving up to date information<br />
of all the walks available in the borough. These will be found<br />
in Libraries, Community Centres and Doctors Surgeries.<br />
In the meantime here is a breakdown of most of the walks<br />

GOOD NEWS<br />
In the 12 months to October <strong>2015</strong>, total Crime in the<br />
Rochdale area was down on previous year’s figures by 6%.<br />
For the same time period in the Rochdale North<br />
Neighbourhood, Criminal Damage and Arson were down<br />
by 10%, Robbery was also down by 9% whilst Burglary<br />
is down by 10%.<br />
DOMESTIC BURGLARY<br />
There have been six cases of attempted Domestic Burglary<br />
in the last month. There has been one on Syke Road,<br />
Spinners Green, <strong>Shawclough</strong> Road, Joseph Street,<br />
Heights Lane and Crowshaw Drive.<br />
VEHICLE CRIME<br />
There have recently been seventeen cases<br />
of vehicle crime. This also includes<br />
criminal damage to vehicles.<br />
There have been thirteen cases of theft<br />
from a vehicle on Troughbeck Way,<br />
Heights Lane, Twinegate, Tulip Grove,<br />
Netley Avenue, <strong>Shawclough</strong> Close, Syke Road, Dewhirst<br />
Road, Glen Gardens, Chatsworth Street, Mountside Close,<br />
Lowerfold Crescent, Bentmeadows,<br />
There have also been three cases of theft of a vehicle on<br />
Beightons Walk, Heights Lane and Bowlers Walk. There<br />
was an attempted theft of a vehicle from Heights Lane<br />
where the offenders gained entry to a vehicle by using a<br />
stolen key. They attempted to start the vehicle but failed<br />
to do so. They then pushed the vehicle a short distance<br />
before abandoning it.<br />
The Syke and <strong>Healey</strong> PACT Meetings are held every three<br />
months. The date of the next meeting is yet to be confirmed<br />
but is normally held at Syke Methodist Church at 18.30pm.<br />
