Spirito da esploratore
The spirit of an explorer
mondo. E non un giro banale: Alaska,
Galapagos, Patagonia, Polinesia: i paradisi
naturalistici del pianeta sono tutti
sulla lunga rotta che Etra affronterà a
partire dal prossimo novembre per due
anni e mezzo, quasi a ripercorrere il lungo
viaggio di esplorazione di Charles Darwin
sul Beagle. “Sarà in effetti una crociera
all’insegna nella contemplazione e studio
della natura”, conferma Coli, nativo di
Porto Ercole ex capitano di peschereccio
e ormai da 20 anni prestato al diporto.
“Dirigeremo verso le aree più selvagge
del pianeta. A nord e a sud fino al 70°
parallelo”.
off shore.
absolutely no doubt
about it, this boat has been
“There’s
built for the real sea,” underlines
Antonio Coli, the captain. “No
sequins and spangles to show off in trendy
marinas, but a hull that can stand up to the
waves and face long voyages.” After all, this
is why Etra came into being. On the crest of
her owner’s dream: to sail around the world.
And not taking just any route: Alaska, the
Galapagos, Patagonia and Polynesia: The
wildlife paradises of the planet are on the
long voyage that Etra will embark on next
November for two and a half years, almost
retracing the long journey of exploration
by Charles Darwin on HMS Beagle. “It
will be a cruise marked by contemplation
and the study of nature,” confirms Coli,
who was born in Porto Ercole, a former
captain of a fishing boat and for 20 years
lent to pleasure sailing. “We will be heading
towards the wildest parts of the planet.
In the north and south to the 70th parallel.”
The boat has everything it takes to meet
the challenge. The design, by S.E.C. of
Viareggio, is that of a “supply vessel”, a
multifunctional boat often used to support
offshore platforms. For some time, those
who have been sailing for pleasure, but are
interested in really sailing, have begun to
take an interest in models of the Explorer
type: They are not real working boats, but
nor are they mere yachts. Their lines put
them closer to tugs and fishing boats, but
in Italia dallo studio dell’architetto Luca
Dodici ospiti quindi, e 9 membri dell’equipaggio
a Viareggio presso i cantieri Lusben/
Aimut/Benetti dove è stata completata in
tutti i suoi particolari tecnici e decorativi.
spiega Coli. “Inoltre sono state apportate
Etra is part of this family of ships with the
spirit of an explorer, ships that want and
can face the oceans. With a length of 159 ft.,
about 35 ft. wide, the boat can take on over
26,400 gallons of fuel and sail without stopping
for 6,000 miles. The interior, designed
in Italy by the firm of the architect Luca
Ingrasciotta, includes 6 double cabins for
guests and 5 cabins for the crew. The owner
wanted the whole of the lower deck exclusively
for the crew. Etra can accommodate
twelve guests and 9 members of crew (the
first officer, the mate, the chief engineer,
a seaman, a chef and 3 stewards in addition
to the captain). “During the round the
world voyage, there will be a crew of fourteen
to allow shifts,” explains Coli, who for
10 years has sailed with the same owner. He
saw Etra come into being and grow, having
spent 18 months in north-eastern China in
a shipyard in Penglai. The structural work
was done in this port city in the province of
Shandong and the engines were mounted
there (two 1050 Hp Cat engines, for a cruising
speed of 14 knots). Then the boat was
then taken to Viareggio, to the Lusben/
Azimut - Benetti yard where all the technical
and decorative details were completed.
It took two years, great effort and unquestionable
professionalism to transform Etra
into an eco-ship truly capable of setting
off to explore the world. “A double hull
was built, which gave her greater stability
and safety,” Coli explains. “In addition,
all those modifications were made, which
e armatore.
ft. is at the stern for the crew)”. The final
cost of euro 14 million is more or less half
the cost of a yacht of similar dimensions.
The whole operation was managed, operatively
and financially, by YM&C (Yacht
Management & Consulting Srl), belonging
to Daniele Ferrari, who coordinated all
the work between the shipyard, the captain
and the owner. YM&C is also the manager
of the boat and will continue to follow her
all over the world.
“Obtaining the Green Star from the Rina
is no small feat,” Ferrari explains to us,
“you have to prove that you have very high
standards in respecting the environment
including the double hull, tanks to collect
Etra rientra nel porto di Viareggio.
Etra returns to the harbor of Viareggio.
condizionamento, vibrazioni) permettendo
un comfort di altissimo livello sia
all’interno che all’esterno di Etra”. Questi
standard sono notazioni che vanno ad
arricchire il certificato di classe di una
nave e vengono applicati solo a unità di
lunghezza superiore ai 35 metri. Non si
tratta solo di adottare soluzioni tecniche
finalizzate alla prevenzione dell’inquinamento
del mare e dell’aria. Occorrono
anche le giuste procedure di tipo operativo.
Infatti una buona protezione ambientale
è frutto in egual misura della tecnologia
e del comportamento a bordo. Ma
per Etra non c'è da preoccuparsi. Come
sottolinea Coli; “L’attenzione all’ambiente
accetta compromessi”. Per uno che vuol
ritracciare le rotte dei grandi esploratori
della storia è certamente lo spirito giusto
per prepararsi al grande viaggio.
the sea, specific criteria for the management
of refuse, limits in the emissions
of gas by the engines and eco-gas in the
air conditioning system. The Comfort
Class, on the other hand, is a standard of
excellence that the Rina issues to certify
the absolute silence of all the utilities on
board (engines, air conditioning, vibrations)
allowing comfort of a very high level
both inside and outside the Etra”. These
standards are notations that enrich the
class certificate of a boat and are applied
only to pleasure vessels over 114 ft. long. It
is not just a question of adopting technical
solutions to prevent polluting the sea and
the air. The right procedures of an operative
type are also necessary, because good
environmental protection is the result in
equal parts of technology and on-board
conduct.
There is no need to worry for Etra. As
Coli emphasizes, “Attention for the environment
is one of the requisites on which
the owner does not accept any compromises”.
For someone who wants to retrace
the routes of the great explorers of history
this is certainly the right spirit to get ready
for the great voyage.
