Su una barca a vela
di 13 mt non sono
tanti i posti sotto
e sopra coperta
dove poter suonare
senza intruppare
con l’arco, ma
quei pochi sono
infinitamente più
belli di qualsiasi
teatro.

«La vita è così, una continua
alternanza tra arsi e tesi: se
è equilibrata va tutto bene,
l’una compensa l’altra. Quando il grafico
però si fissa su una delle due cominciano i
problemi». In queste parole scritte sul suo
diario di bordo durante una veleggiata nel
mar di Sicilia, Roberto Soldatini prende
in prestito il linguaggio della musica e
dei venti per raccontare com’è delicato e
forte al contempo l’equilibrio che regola
le cose della vita. Un giorno sei un celebre
violoncellista, un compositore e un direttore
d’orchestra, il giorno dopo decidi di
cambiare tutto, di girare la boa e lanciarti
di bolina sparata in una nuova dimensione.
Per lui, la dimensione del mare. Senza
abbandonare la musica, anzi, dandole
ancora più fiato, più vento, più respiro.
A 50 anni Soldatini prende con sé il violoncello
e per il resto si lascia tutto alle
spalle, prendendo il largo nel vero senso
della parola. Classe 1960, una carriera

In these words written in his log during a
trip in the sea of Sicily, Roberto Soldatini
borrows the language of sails and winds
to say how delicate and strong the balance
is that regulates the things of life. One day
you are a famous cellist, a composer and
conductor. And the next day you decide to
change everything, to round the buoy and
throw yourself close to the wind in a new
dimension.
For him, the dimension of the sea, but
without giving up music, on the contrary,
giving it even more breath, more wind and
more air. At 50, Soldatini takes with him
his cello and leaves everything else behind
him, setting sail in the true meaning of
the word. Born in 1960, a highly respectable
career in classical and light music, he

sua vita; di più, un nuovo
diario, un diario di bordo.
Nel giro di due anni vende
le sue proprietà e compra
una vela, un leggiadro
Moody 44 di 18 anni, una
barca resistente e confortevole,
solida, veloce, affidabile.
La barca diventa
casa. Roberto studia i
venti e il mare, le rotte e le
carte. Si circonda di libri e
di cose belle per colorare
i caldi interni in teak e i
mobili in massello che un
artigiano appassionato ha
modellato per il Denecia
II, questo il nome dato
al Moody dal precedente
proprietario e che Soldatini
ha deciso di lasciare
così. Il celebre musicista
prende la patente nautica
e salpa per sposare la
libertà del mare e della
musica. E quale musica!
Il violoncello che naviga con Soldatini non
è uno strumento qualsiasi, seppur bello,
seppur prezioso: è uno Stradivari. Un
capolavoro, inestimabile nel prezzo tanto
quanto lo è nei suoni e nei timbri sonori.
Uno strumento meraviglioso. Al mondo
sembra siano solo una dozzina i violoncelli
costruiti dal celeberrimo liutaio cremonese.
Ora è Roberto a custodirlo, come ha
chiesto il proprietario. Il magnate, morto
qualche tempo fa, ha affidato lo Stradivari
a Soldatini con un unica indicazione:
farlo vivere. Ovvero, suonarlo, suonarlo
e ancora suonarlo. Per consentire agli
strumenti in legno di mantenere la perfezione
del suono, infatti, ci vogliono cura
e costanza, ma soprattutto bisogna farli
«lavorare». Farli vivere. L’alternativa
era quella di chiudere questo capolavoro
dentro una banca. Consentiteci un piccolo
gioco di parole: meglio una barca!
E proprio così è andata. Il Moody

vacanze in alta montagna,
ora che non ci sono più il
loro procedere verso la luce
ha “colorato” la foto di un
ulteriore significato.

In two years he sells what
he owns and buys a yacht,
a pretty eighteen-year-old
Moody 44, a sturdy and
comfortable boat which
is sold, fast and reliable.
The boat becomes his
home, Roberto studies the
winds and the sea, routes
and maps. He surrounds
himself with books and
the beautiful things that
color the warm teak interiors
and the solid wood
furniture that a passionate
craftsman has
made for the Denecia II,
which is the name given
to the Moody by her previous
owner and which
Soldatini has decided to
leave. The famous musician
takes the sailing
license and set sail for a
life that today marries the
freedom of the sea and of music. And what
music!
The cello that sails with Soldatini is not
just any instrument, although fine and
precious: it is a Stradivarius. A masterpiece
of inestimable value and as priceless
in its sounds and tones. A marvelous instrument.
Apparently there are only a dozen
cellos in the world that were made by the
famous violin-maker from Cremona. Now
Roberto has it. As its owner requested.
The magnate, who died some time ago, entrusted
the Stradivarius to Soldatini with
only one indication: to make it live. In other
words to play it, to play it again and to
keep playing it. To allow wooden instruments
to keep their sound perfect, care and
constancy are needed, but above all they
have to be made to “work”. To make them
live. The alternative was to close this masterpiece
away in a bank. But a boat is better!
And this is how it went. The Moody

Entrai nell’ufficio del Comune
manifestando la mia intenzione di
trasferire la mia residenza da Roma a
Napoli, suscitando interesse, soddisfazione
e allegria in tutti gli impiegati, contenti
di un caso inverso alla tendenza generale.
“Uè dottò ma che bella cosa!” Poi però
specificai: “Si, ma c’è un problemino, io vivo
in barca”... Pur costituendo io il primo caso
in Italia, l’impiegata dell’ufficio non batté
ciglio, consultò un superiore al telefono
e mi dette l’elenco dei documenti che le
dovevo portare. A Roma (Fiumicino) non
ero riuscito ad ottenerla, avevo deciso di
muovere battaglia per fare valere un diritto
di cittadino così come viene rispettato da
altri paesi della Comunità Europea, ma
poi è stato più facile cambiare Comune. In
sunto: a Napoli ho ottenuto la residenza in
barca che non ero riuscito ad avere a Roma
(Fiumicino), primo caso in Italia, costituisce
il famoso “precedente” in legge.

dell’infinito, le lunghe veleggiate spinte
dalla brezza. La bellezza del mondo. Ci
voleva un compagno di viaggio per lo Stradivari.
Il magnate ha capito che rinchiuderlo
sarebbe stato come impedire a un
bastimento di uscire dal porto. Così l’ha
affidato a Soldatini. L’uomo, il violoncello
e il mare. Roberto, unico italiano ad avere
ufficialmente la residenza "sul mare", con
la sua Denecia II è ora tornato a casa,

Cariddi. E l'inverno? "Sto finendo il mio
primo libro e mi preparo a debuttare, il
10 gennaio 2014, al Nuovo Teatro Sanità
di Napoli come attore in una piéce tratta
da Saramago". Un'altra rotta tra le vie,
infinite, del mare.

Roberto, the only Italian to be officially
resident “at sea” with his Denecia II is
back home now, in the port of Naples,
after a summer on the routes of Ulysses
and after a fine storm that blew up in the
Strait by the usual Scylla and Charybdis.
And in the winter? “I am finishing my
first book and I am getting ready to debut,
on January 10 2014 at the Nuovo Teatro
Sanità in Naples as an actor in a play
based on a work by Saramago.” Another
route in the infinite paths of the sea.
