legno è adatta a chi ama
scelto Patience, classe 1931, e tutta rigorosamente
in legno». Antonio Falchetti, milanese,
“An English friend once told me
that a wooden boat is for people
who love boats, whilst fiberglass
boats are for people who love sailing. I don’t
know whether that’s true, but I do know that
when I decided to look for a boat that would
accompany my family and I for a long time,
after having seen and considered everything,
from fiberglass to carbon, from boats for
racing to motor yachts, in the end I chose
Patience, launched in 1931, and 100% made
from wood.” Antonio Falchetti, Milanese,
46 years old, married to Antonia and father
of two youngsters, Umberto and Elena, had
a very personal approach to fulfilling his
project.
His bond with the sea goes back a long time.
His father, Umberto, is from Genoa and the
Patience in regata. Il restauro ha mantenuto
intatte le linee e le caratteristiche esterne
dell’imbarcazione. Sono stati aggiunti
solo quattro winch per ridurre al minimo
il numero delle persone necessarie alle
manovre. Nella pagina precedente, una
suggestiva immagine presa a pelo d’acqua.
Patience in a regatta. The restoration has
kept the lines and external features of the
boat unchanged. Only four winches have
been added to reduce to a minimum the
number of people necessary for handling the
boat. On the previous page, an evocative
data. Il papà, Umberto, è genovese e le
vacanze in famiglia venivano normalmente
trascorse a Tellaro, nel Golfo di La
Spezia. «Per la mia prima comunione», ricorda
Antonio, «ricevetti in dono un’Alpa
Tris.
me ne ero scordato, alcuni amici di passaggio
a Viareggio e al corrente del fatto
che stavo cercando una barca mi dissero
di averne vista una splendida, che rispondeva
esattamente ai miei desideri. Mi
condussero a vederla e mi trovai di fronte
proprio a quello scafo. Come non arrendersi
ad una simile casualità?».
Il restauro ha richiesto tempi lunghi ed
«è stato un po’ travagliato» (difficile,
peraltro, venire a conoscenza di restauri
che non lo siano). Soprattutto ha posto
fin dall’inizio all’armatore i classici dubbi
family normally spent their holidays in Tellaro,
in the Gulf of La Spezia. “For my first
communion,” Antonio recalls, “I received
an Alpa Tris. I realized straight away that
sailing had immediately become part of my
life.” First Kodoku, an eight-meter “gozzo”
or Ligurian fishing boat, with which I began
to cruise along the coast for the first time and
then Barabba, the 13-meter wooden ketch
that was formally the father’s but actually
used by his son, marked many years of adventures
at sea, emotions and memories.
Patience arrived in 2003: a wooden hull
worn out by time and negligence, caught
sight of by chance in a shipyard in the gulf
of La Spezia, fascinating by the elegance
of its lines but not even considered for purchase,
because of its very sorry state. “Then,”
recalls Falchetti, “when I had forgotten
all about it, some friends passing through
Viareggio who knew that I was looking for
a boat, told me that they had seen a splendid
one, which was the exact answer to my
wishes. They took me to see it and I found
myself in front of that boat. It was impossible
not to give in to such a coincidence!”
The restoration took a long time and “it
wasn’t all smooth sailing” (moreover, it was
difficult to find out about restoration work
which is not easily seen). Above all, from the
start, the owner had to face the classic doubts
and dilemmas of who, having a fine page of
history of sailing in their hands, has to add
their words for their needs (and wishes) as
seafarers.
“Boats are made for sailing,” he says, “but
a cruise – whether long or short – also means
living on board with your family, having a
few friends as guests, enjoying the services
of a harbor but also the atmosphere of nights
in the roadsteads. The interior of a boat is a
world in itself, which moves independently
from the time passing outside. This is why
a boat must not only be beautiful, but also
Gli interni dell’imbarcazione
richiamano lo stile originario ma,
per volontà dell’armatore,
garantiscono lo svolgimento della vita
di bordo con il massimo comfort,
anche per crociere di lunga durata.
The interior of the boat recalls the
original style but, following
the owner’s wishes, guarantees
life on board with maximum comfort,
even for long cruises.
porto ma anche delle atmosfere delle notti
in rada.
A volte i
restauri rigorosamente filologici possono
a bordo l’elettricità, né strumenti elettronici
inossidabile dipinto, come quasi sempre
avviene). Gli stessi motori, anche quando
sono vecchi, sovente furono aggiunti
allo scafo originale solo qualche decennio
dopo, esattamente come gli argani per
salpare l’ancora. E allora cosa fare di questo
gioiello che, portato in Italia dall’Inghilterra
nel 1935, fu per anni la gioia e
il piacere della famiglia nata dall’unione
comfortable and welcoming. At times, strictly
philological restoration can reduce the final
degree of comfort.”
Moreover, restoration is always a compromise.
Otherwise, the majority of vintage
boats should not have electricity on board or
electronic instruments such as a wind station
or GPS, or generators or steel tanks for
water, let alone hot water for showers. The
sails should also be made from hemp and
the brasses really made from brass (and not
painted steel as is almost always the case).
The engines as well, even when they are old,
were often added to the original hull only a
few decades later, exactly like the capstans
to weigh anchor. And so what could be done
with this gem which, brought to Italy from
England in 1935, was for many years the
joy and pleasure of the family founded by
the marriage between Prince Alvaro Borbon
De Orleans and Carla Parodi Delfino?
The answer is “The style, the atmosphere,
the charm and also the aesthetic highlights
of the vintage boat have to be kept of course
– otherwise what’s the point of having bought
it – but nor can you renounce making it
41
During this year too, Patience will be present in some
of the most important regattas for vintage boats.
del Principe Alvaro Borbon De Orleans e
Carla Parodi Delfino?
in acqua, saremo noi a stare a bordo, giorno
e notte, estate e inverno. E saremo noi,
in quello spazio, a trascorrere il tempo, a
mangiare, a cercare rifugio e riposo».
a cozy and comfortable place which fits in
with our dearest wishes. What’s the point of
sailing on a splendid vintage boat and, in
the evening, having to look for a restaurant
where you can eat something acceptable or a
hotel to spend a decent night? I realize that
my point of view might provoke some differences
of views with the specialist in this
type of work, but I believe that you should
never forget that, when the boat is back in
the water, we will be the ones on board, day
and night, summer and winter. And we will
be the ones who spend time, eat, look for shelter
and rest there.”
The result: Antonia, who is an excellent
cook, not only has a perfectly equipped
kitchen on Patience, but also a dishwasher;
the heat pump and air conditioning guarantee
comfort even in the harshest seasons or
when the heat is at its most torrid; a generator
and a desalinator allow autonomy for
those who prefer the roadsteads to crowded
jetties and a washing machines solves the
problems of life on board with children.
42
43
Risultato: Antonia, che è una cuoca eccellente,
non solo dispone su Patience di
una cucina perfettamente attrezzata, ma
anche della lavapiatti; la pompa di calore
e l’aria condizionata garantiscono ambienti
accoglienti anche nelle stagioni più
avverse o nei momenti climatici più torridi;
generatore e dissalatore consentono
all’affollamento delle banchine;
E in coperta? «Qualcu-
no», dice sorridendo Falchetti, «ha osservato
che non avrei dovuto mettere quattro
winch in più. Gli ho solo spiegato che,
in cambio, avrebbe dovuto darmi quattro
marinai, mentre io amo portare la barca
con l’aiuto di un solo marinaio. Perché
solo così, curando in ogni dettaglio tutti
i momenti del restauro, conoscendone
ogni segreto costruttivo e impiantistico, e
proprio come ormai è Patience».
And on deck? “Someone remarked that I
shouldn’t have put four extra winches,”
says Falchetti smiling. “I merely explained
that, in exchange, he should have given me
four sailors, whilst I like to sail the boat
with the help of only one sailor. It’s only
that way, by following every step of the restoration
in great detail, learning every secret
of its construction and installations,
relishing every hour at the helm and handling
it that a boat really becomes yours,
just as Patience is now.”
Per Antonio Falchetti la barca è una
componente, a pieno titolo, della vita.
Giusto quindi che sia anche
il luogo per la celebrazione
del matrimonio di una coppia di amici.
For Antonio Falchetti, the boat is a
legitimate component of life.
So it is right that it is also a place
to celebrate the wedding
of a couple of friends.
