Measurement, metric conversion, imperial conversion, reading charts
Nutrition
In the last activity we calculated the total amount of calories you should be eating each
day. In this activity we calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is a measure of
body fat based on height and weight that applies to both adult men and women.
BMI Categories:
• Underweight less than 18.5
• Normal weight equals 18.5 - 24.9
• Overweight greater than 25 - 29.9
• Obesity is over 30
Remember: 1 foot = 12 inches 1 inch = 2.54 cm. 1 kilogram = 2.2 lbs.
Example: Calculate the BMI for someone who is 6 feet 2 inches (6’ 2”) tall and weighs
230 lbs.
Solution: Step 1: Calculate the height in inches. 6 feet x 12 inches + 2 inches = 74
inches
Step 2: Look on the chart on the next page. BMI is 29.5
The person has a BMI between 29 and 30 and would be considered overweight.
