minimum of 4 seconds is essential because
this is how the officer will know that the
nystagmus is both distinct and sustained. If
the eyes are held in that position for a lesser
amount of time, the officer may see nystagmus,
but he cannot say that it was distinct
(very obvious) and that it was sustained
(lasting). Thus holding the eye in the maximum
deviation position for a minimum of
4 seconds is essential.
Finally, if the officer fails to complete two
passes and only does one pass, then he has
no opportunity to rule out a false positive.
The purpose of the second pass is to ensure
that what the officer thinks he observed
in the eyes on the first pass is really there
by confirming it on the second pass. For
instance, let’s say on the first pass the officer
believed he observed distinct and sustained
nystagmus at maximum deviation present
in the right eye. On the second pass he
should be able to confirm the distinct and
sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation
in the eyes. If he does not, then it’s not to
be counted as a clue. Thus the second pass
is essential!

clue of the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test
- onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees.

study, psychologist Oscar Ybarra at the
U-Michigan Institute for Social Research
tested a large group of people up to 96
years old. He found that just 10 minutes
of conversation with a friend worked just
as well as elderly activities involving brain
games, like crossword puzzles to strengthen
the memory.
“In our study, socializing was just as effective
as more traditional kinds of mental exercise
in boosting memory and intellectual
performance,” he said. So elderly should
have plenty of time to socialize. It not only
will help with memory, but also depression
and loneliness.
I remember just pointing a video recorder
at my grandmother and started a
Conversation. We talked about her
Childhood and the price of bread, soon it
was a history lesson for generations of family
members. Now affectionately called “the
tape” it has been a generational memory in
our family.
Stories from Back in the “old days” teach
our children to respect life and the things
we have and are lot more fun then videos
these days of assaults, old people falling or
other noise.
