Understand<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
The unofficial yet elegant and simple guide to<br />
gender awareness.<br />
Gender today is def<strong>in</strong>ed as A social cultural<br />
and personal construct. We have<br />
moved away from b<strong>in</strong>ary def<strong>in</strong>itions<br />
and it is not a biological construct; separate<br />
from the sex-based categories of<br />
male/female.<br />
But its not really about gender is it? Its<br />
about how you th<strong>in</strong>k and act. The lack<br />
of understand<strong>in</strong>g that creates bully<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and can be verbal, physical, or via<br />
the Internet. It can severely affect the<br />
victim’s self-image, social <strong>in</strong>teractions,<br />
and often leads to <strong>in</strong>security, lack of<br />
self-esteem, and depression. Who <strong>in</strong><br />
their right m<strong>in</strong>d would be happy to see<br />
others suffer? Probably those that suffer<br />
the most. maybe some <strong>in</strong> the LGBT<br />
community felt it happen to them and<br />
now they do it to others. We have many<br />
bullies all around us. I see it on face<br />
book, constant jabs and creat<strong>in</strong>g social<br />
clicks that exclude rather the <strong>in</strong>clude.<br />
People even use their friends to trick<br />
them <strong>in</strong>to bully<strong>in</strong>g others. Some times<br />
its just <strong>in</strong>tentional. We may be crazy<br />
but really we are all we have, we should<br />
make life better not harder for others.<br />

sometimes this difference can be quite<br />

AdamsArtExpose’<br />
ARTISTS IN HISTORY WHO HAVE INSPIRED ARTIST<br />
OF TODAY - EGON SCHIELE<br />
The primary objective of AdamsArtExpose’<br />
is to <strong>in</strong>form about and promote local artists<br />
and art events of <strong>in</strong>terest to the LGBT community.<br />
Occasionally I will <strong>in</strong>clude historical<br />
or recent headl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>formation on art,<br />
or artists that will provide some perspective<br />
on the art scene today or the <strong>in</strong>fluences of<br />
the past on the present.<br />
Last <strong>week</strong> featured Francisco Vargas, of<br />
Smith Vargas Gallery <strong>in</strong> <strong>Palm</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
Next <strong>week</strong> will feature Roy Smith, the other<br />
half of Smith Vargas Gallery. He is an<br />
accomplished figurative artist who <strong>in</strong>dicates<br />
that one artist who has most <strong>in</strong>spired him is<br />
Egon Schiele.<br />
Egon Schiele experienced a prolific, however,<br />
short life from 1890 to 1918. He died<br />
at age 28 of <strong>in</strong>fluenza which was plagu<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Europe at the time. His pregnant wife died<br />
3 days prior to him. At the time he was on<br />
the verge of be<strong>in</strong>g a recognized successful<br />
artist <strong>in</strong> Austria.<br />
Schiele is identified as an expressionist<br />
<strong>in</strong> his work. His medium was primarily<br />
draw<strong>in</strong>g it is stated that he completed over<br />
three thousand draw<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> his short career.<br />
His primary subject matter was the human<br />
figure. The draw<strong>in</strong>gs are not <strong>in</strong> the traditional<br />
classical poses, <strong>in</strong>stead, they are often<br />
nude and <strong>in</strong> erotic reveal<strong>in</strong>g angles. Figurative<br />
distortions <strong>in</strong> the outl<strong>in</strong>e contour of his<br />
draw<strong>in</strong>gs reveal an immediate expression<br />
that is characteristic of his work. Even <strong>in</strong><br />
his pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs, the outl<strong>in</strong>e of the draw<strong>in</strong>g<br />
is emphasized as the primary form of the<br />
figure. Schiele did several self figure portraits<br />
as well as many draw<strong>in</strong>gs of women<br />
<strong>in</strong> erotic poses <strong>in</strong>dividually and with more<br />
than one figure <strong>in</strong> the composition.<br />
When you visit the Smith-Vargas Gallery,<br />
you will enjoy view<strong>in</strong>g Roy Smith’s work,<br />
and will notice the <strong>in</strong>fluence of Egon<br />
Schliele on the contemporary style of figure<br />
draw<strong>in</strong>g and pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g which he creates.<br />

as Sa<strong>in</strong>t Siebastian, the other of two<br />
