This month sees the charity Petrus People, which advertise
in all our magazines each month, celebrate their second
birthday. Read about the good work that they do on pages
44 and 45. We would recommend that you visit their store
on Hamer Lane Rochdale OL16 2UL as it’s like an Aladdin’s
Cave!
A date for your diaries is definitely the Exhibition to be held
at St George’s Church in April 2016 where local people will
have the opportunity to view a life size replica of the Turin
Shroud, one of only six in the world. On page 52 there’s
also a list of key events at Springhill Hospice this year. With
a bumper What’s On Guide, there’s plenty to look forward
in the forthcoming months.
Remember to contact us if you are organising an event or
involved in a local cause and we will include your
information for free.
Until next month…….
Need some help with
technology?
With just a few weeks to go before Rochdale Digital Festival returns, organisers have
revealed more about this year’s event. The festival, aimed at de-mystifying
technology and showing how useful, easy and fun to use it can be, will be staged at
Number One Riverside on Saturday 27 February.
Names already confirmed to be at the festival include Barclays, Google, BBC iPlayer, 02 Rochdale and BT.
They’ll be joined by a host of others including Boots, Rochdale Online and Hopwood Hall College.
Organised by Rochdale Borough Council, in partnership with BBC Radio Manchester, the festival has been
designed to improve people’s digital skills with hands-on help and advice for all age groups. Visitors will be
able to find out how to do online banking, how to browse products, shop or read a book online, and get tips
on using smartphones and tablets.
If you want to know more about how to use technology to find a job, you can visit the Careers and Skills Zone
for expert advice on the digital skills you need to find work in 2016 and beyond. For the first time there will
be a Digital Community and Creative Zone, highlighting local digital projects and how they can help you.
There will also be demonstrations of how residents can use the council website to avoid making unnecessary
and time-consuming telephone calls or face-to-face visits. There will be friendly faces on hand to show how
easy it can be and tablets, phones and computers will be available for people to try.
Councillor Neil Emmott, Cabinet Member for Corporate Services and Neighbourhoods said:
“We’ve really stepped up a gear for 2016 and already have a great line-up of local and national names
joining us. It’s going to be an unmissable day for local residents, helping you do more online, whatever your
level. You’ll be able to find out how to do online banking, how to browse products, shop or read a book online
and get tips on using a smartphone or tablet. There will be friendly faces on hand to show you step by step
just how easy it is, as well as tablets, phones and computers for you to have a go on.”
The festival will bring together a range of exhibitions, performances and workshops and there will also be a
‘help-bar’ where an 02 ‘guru’ and students will help you get the best from your smartphone and tablet.
Rochdale Digital Festival is being held as part of BeOnline 2016 – a national two-week campaign to help
people discover the internet and how it can help them make 2016 a year of transformation.
If you’re already online, find out more about the event at www.rochdale.gov.uk/RDFest16
DO MORE ONLINE: Rochdale Digital Festival is promising all the help you need to get to grips with
technology.
A Slice of Saturday Night
A big taste of the 1960s comes to Rochdale
Some of the best young musical talent in the borough will be onstage this April at the Curtain
Theatre this April. The smash hit musical “A Slice of Saturday Night” tells the story of a single
evening in 1964 in the basement “Club a Go-Go” nightclub. It is accompanied by a live four
piece beat combo not dissimilar to The Fab Four and the fashions and haircuts match the beats
and rhythms.
Musical director Paul Nicholls is making his debut at the Curtain Theatre said, “A Slice of Saturday Night is one of my all-time
favourite shows. What the writers have done is take the styles, riffs, solos and harmonies
of dozens of favourite sixties tunes, and reworked them into a jukebox full of familiar
seeming songs and routines. Every song in the show, sounds like you’ve heard it before,
but you haven’t.”
“The choice of show is no accident either.” added director Andy Kelly. “The production
will showcase some of the best youth performers in the town, most of whom are making
their Curtain Theatre debut. Most of the cast are studying performance or musical theatre
at colleges across the North West, and are looking to go into acting professionally.
We are very fortunate to get them now for this two week run.”
This is not the first time Andy has tackled this material either. ”Twenty years ago, I
played the part of Eddie in the show. And I was ten years too old then! The youngsters
in the cast are all supposed to be around 17, and the show tackles the issues around
relationships, growing up, love and separation- all in a comic way though”
“A Slice of Saturday Night” by the Heather Brothers (with Kind Permission from Samuel French Limited) runs from Monday 11th
April-Saturday 23rd April 2016 at the Curtain Theatre Rochdale.
The Curtain Theatre manages its audience through an invite system. You are invited to come and
see a performance by being on the invitation list, to which you receive the chance to see all of the
five productions that year. (plus some guest companies who use the theatre.) To be added to the
list you simply need to submit your full name and address to :
Petrus People Community
Store Celebrate their
Second Birthday
As we celebrate our 2nd birthday here at the store, it seems like a good time to take
stock of what has been achieved in the last 2 years and to make our customers and
donors more aware of the work of Petrus Community in Rochdale and the
surrounding boroughs.
Petrus People Community Store is a social enterprise created to provide much needed funds towards the ongoing
work of Petrus Community. Petrus have been providing accommodation and support services as well as
essential meals, therapeutic groups, and life skills tutoring for over 40 years in Rochdale borough areas and
now also in Rossendale and Oldham.
anything and everything; including furniture, clothing, electricals, toys, books, music, DVD’s, bric-a-brac and
baby equipment. We have some weird and wonderful items donated even some items that we don’t know the
purpose of! If you are having a clear out of items that are in good condition please call us, we can collect
furniture locally.
At the store we have received great support from a small army of around 85 volunteers! This amazing team
of people have contributed in all aspects of the building maintenance and operation of the store. Rochdale
Rotary Club has proved an indispensable source of support, labour and skills for us. Other volunteers are
drawn from all areas of our community; Petrus service users, customers, donors, work placements, Rochdale
people that want to support a worthy cause.
We operate a free clothing scheme for people that are sleeping rough around our borough and for families in
crisis situations. These are referred by an agency worker such as school worker, health visitor, support worker,
housing officer.
CRIME PREVENTION TIPS
Throughout the cold months, please take care when
deicing your car. If you are driving anywhere early in
the morning and your car is covered with frost, don't
leave the engine running while you are not with it,
even if it is for a couple of seconds. Not only could you
not be insured if your car is stolen, if you leave it on a
road, running and unattended you could be prosecuted
for the offence of "quitting".
We continue to tackle burglaries in your area, research into
Rochdale offences shows the below advice will help reduce the
chance of you becoming a victim of burglary. Offenders are
mainly entering houses through ground floor rear windows /
doors - some of these have been windows left open, as the
cold weather is on its way, open window insecurities will
decrease but please if you are out or in another room close
your windows & doors. Items from the garden are being used
to aid the offenders, so far we have - Wheelie bins, garden
rakes, garden chairs that have been used - if you have a shed
please use & lock it keeping these items out of sign & mind of
would be thieves. Some homes have been successful in
disrupting offenders by having a working house alarm that is
set while the occupants are out or in bed -
each crime reported over the period
researched shows where a house
alarm has been set off the offenders
haven't managed to gain access &
have left with nothing.
Please use this advice to reduce the chances of you becoming
a victim of crime. This advice has been tailored to the
particular type of criminals operating in the Rochdale area. We
are working hard to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour in
this area and information from the community is vital.
BEAT THE BURGLAR
Outside - your first line of defence
•Walls, gates and fences - High fences are hard to climb, but
they give a burglar cover once he's over. So keep them low.
The best have a trellis on top, making them difficult to climb.
And make sure to lock any gates to prevent access to the side
or rear of your property.
•Hedges and plants - Prickly bushes and hedges around a
garden can act as a deterrent to a burglar.
•Lighting and driveways - Get an outdoor light with a sensor
that comes on when someone's around and don't
underestimate the deterrent of a gravel drive. It makes quite a
noise when walked on and can deter burglars.
Is anybody home?
Lights - You can get plug-in timers for your lamps - and timers
for your ceiling lights. Don't just light up the hall. Fool a
burglar by lighting up the landing, bathroom, bedroom and
living room too. Really fox him by varying the times each light
comes on. Sound advices - Use a plug-in timer for a radio -
make it a talk station rather than music.
Windows - Remember to shut all windows, even small and
upstairs ones, when you leave the house, in your garden or
in the rear of your property. If you're upstairs, close your
downstairs windows and if you're planning some time
away, get a trusted neighbour to shut the
curtains at night. You could return the favour
some time!
Burrs Country Park and
The River Irwell
Bury, of course, is famous for its market and its black puddings. It also has some interesting and beautiful countryside
on its doorstep and this walk is a short taster of what it has to offer. Take the Brandlesholme Road out of Bury and
very shortly turn right following the brown signs to Burrs Country Park. Leaving the car at the car park take a few
minutes to read the interesting stories on display on the information boards which explain the industrial heritage
of the site. Now head for the caravan site but soon turn left and follow the path around the large grass field which
will soon lead you to a walk through woods down to the River Irwell. As you approach the river you will walk
alongside a channel which was constructed at the time of the Manchester, Bolton and Bury canal to feed the reservoir
at Elton some two miles away which in turn fed the canal. This was supplied by the construction of a weir, which
you soon reach, to raise the water level. The system is still working some 220 years since its construction although
the canal is long since defunct.
Continue to follow the path until you come to a railway bridge under
the East Lancashire Railway where you may encounter a steam train
working the line from Bury to Rawtenstall. Pass under the bridge and
follow the road up by a couple of farms until you reach a path turning
sharply left marked Irwell Sculpture Trail which you should now follow.
I could not see any sculptures so good luck with finding any. The path
now passes above woods and when you come to a turning to the left
follow it down through the woods to a railway crossing. Cross the
railway carefully and turn right and you will soon reach Station Road.
Here is a fine bridge over the river which you should cross. Soon you
will arrive in the hamlet of Summerseat where you will find a garden
centre with toilets and refreshments.
Continue to the end of the terraced houses and turn left up the flight of steps. At the top follow the road for a hundred
yards then turn left along Higher Summerseat where two pubs offer meals. The walk now levels and offers expansive views towards Tottington,
Walshaw and Holcolm Hill. Across the Irwell valley Rooley Moor wind farm is clearly visible. Once you have passed the new tennis centre
and reached the main road it is worth catching a bus if one is due. This will save a somewhat tedious walk along this busy section of road.
If you do so then alight at Hunstanton Drive. If you walk then the
varied architecture of the property hereabouts offers some interest
to this section of the walk.
Walk down Hunstanton Drive to the bottom of the hill and turn
left. On your left you will find the canal feeder once again
looking like static water. Below it must move very slowly on its
inexorable journey to Elton. In a few hundred yards you will
be back at the car. There is an old pub The Brown Cow, built
as a farm in 1792, tucked away near the caravan site which
will hopefully be open for refreshments and toilets. The full
walk is about 5 miles.
TURIN SHROUD EXHIBITION COMING
TO ROCHDALE
Everyone loves a good mystery. The Loch Ness
Monster, the Bermuda Triangle and the Mary
Celeste are just three but among the longest
lasting and most baffling puzzles is the Turin
Shroud. This has divided experts for centuries and
even today there is no definitive view.
For those who have never heard of it, the Shroud of Turin is a
strip of linen cloth about 12 feet long which is held in Turin
Cathedral and very rarely seen in public. The last occasion was
when the current Pope was given access to the relic during a visit
to the city last year (2015).
So what is so special about it? The Shroud carries an image of
a man of middle-eastern appearance, both front and back. He
is about six-feet tall and has long hair, typical of men in biblical
times. There are what appear to be blood stains and wounds in
hands, feet and side which coincide with the accounts of Jesus
Christ’s death as described in the Gospels. A few singe marks
and minor repairs are also in evidence. The image is like a
photographic negative.
Many experts believe that this is the actual burial shroud of Jesus
Christ in which he was wrapped after being taken down from the
cross, laid in a tomb and then rose again on Easter Day – the
foundation of Christianity.
Equally there are experts who discount this theory but one thing
that puzzles them all is how the image came to be on the cloth.
Photography was unknown but the image is anatomically correct.
How was it imprinted on the cloth?
Surprisingly carbon dating has been allowed only on strands of
cloth used to repair the Shroud, probably in the middle ages but
no one has been allowed to remove strands from the original
material to test its authenticity.
Now people of all faiths (and none) in Rochdale will have the
opportunity to see a full-size replica (one of only six in the world)
in an exhibition which will be in Saint George’s Church,,
Thai Style Mussels
I love mussels but only if really fresh, in season
and nice and plump. I’ve given them an Asian
style makeover which gives them an awesome
kick. Have some hot crusty bread ready at the
end to mop up the juices.
If your in a rush or a bit dodgy with your knife
skills you could always blend up the onion, chilli,
garlic, ginger, fennel and lemon grass in a food
processor instead of chopping everything fine by
hand.
Thai Style Mussels
Serves 2
2 table spoons olive oil
1 small onion – chopped fine
1 red chilli – de-seeded and chopped fine
1 clove garlic – chopped fine
1 knob of fresh root ginger – chopped fine
½ fennel chopped fine
½ lemon grass – chopped fine
Method
1) Heat the olive oil in a large sauce pan. Add the onion, chilli,
garlic, ginger, fennel and lemon grass and sauté for 3-4
minutes until softened.
2) Add the mussels and white wine and cover. Cook over a high
heat for approx 4 minutes shaking the pan frequently until the
mussels open.
3) Transfer the mussels to warmed serving bowls and add the
coconut cream and coriander to the cooking liquor in the pan.
Bring to the boil, season to taste then pour over the mussels
and serve immediately with a squeeze of fresh lime .
1200g mussels
250ml dry white wine
To Finish
50g coconut cream
1 table spoon roughly chopped
coriander
Squeeze fresh lime
