„Der Teide ist der dritthöchste
Inselvulkan der Welt (3718m). Er
gehört zu den 16 gefährlichsten –
nicht, weil er besonders aktiv ist,
sondern weil er in einem relativ dicht
besiedelten Gebiet liegt. Deswegen ist
es so wichtig, dass wir Vulkanologen
regelmäßig die vulkanischen Gase
messen. Mit dem Fluxmeter bestimmen
wir das Verhältnis zwischen
Wasserdampf und Kohlendioxid in
der Luft. Steigt der Wasserdampf-
Anteil, wissen wir, dass der Vulkan
aktiver ist . Natürlich kann man nicht
genau vorhersagen, wann der Teide
das nächste Mal ausbrechen wird. Wir
sind uns aber sicher, dass es in den
nächsten 100 Jahren passieren wird.“

“At 3,718m, Mount Teide is the third
highest island volcano in the world.
It’s also one of the 16 most dangerous.
That’s not because it’s particularly
active, but mainly because it’s in a
relatively densely populated area.
That’s why it’s so important we
volcanologists measure its volcanic
gases regularly. We use a ‘fluxmeter’
to assess the relationship between
water vapour and carbon dioxide in
the air. If the proportion of water
vapour increases, we know that the
volcano is more active. Of course, it’s
impossible to predict exactly when
Mount Teide will next erupt. We’re
certain, though, it will happen within
the next 100 years.”
