You may remember that we featured the success<br />
of <strong>Heywood</strong> in Bloom last year – in total twelve<br />
Awards were achieved. Plans are afoot for this<br />
year’s entry and the first fundraising event was<br />
recently held at Tilly’s Tea Room. All funds raised<br />
will contribute towards purchasing the flowers for<br />
this year’s hanging baskets and planters which so<br />
many local residents and visitors will enjoy as they<br />
walk and drive through the town.<br />
With spring around the corner, we are hoping to<br />
hear from other local residents who might be<br />
involved in forthcoming local events. One event<br />
which we will be featuring in forthcoming issues<br />
is the 1940’s event to be held in the town on 18th<br />
June.<br />

<strong>Hopwood</strong> Hall sports Arena has recently undergone a major transformation of its facilities and can now boast some of the best<br />

Tour de Terry<br />
A date for your diary is 29th <strong>March</strong> when local residentTerry Keen, 69,<br />
will be taking part in a 1,400-mile cycle tour to mark the Queen's 90th<br />
birthday and to raise money for charity “Grandparents Plus” which<br />
supports grandparents who have to look after their grandchildren due<br />
to difficult family situations.<br />
Terry will be starting the tour in <strong>March</strong> and finishing in May in time to<br />
deliver a card to Buckingham Palace to commemorate the Queen's 90th<br />
Birthday.<br />
At 10am on 29th, Terry will arrive at Bridgewood Lodge which is a<br />
retirement housing scheme on Margaret St, <strong>Heywood</strong>. He will be<br />
greeted by the tenants as well as members of the local community.<br />
Bridgewood Lodge will hold a day of fun activities and as part of this,<br />
one of the tenants there who is 91 this year, is going to dress up as the<br />
Queen turning her wheelchair into a throne. She will lead the official<br />
welcome party for Terry at Bridgewood Lodge.<br />

Springhill Hospice - 10th Birthday Hospice to Hospice Walk<br />
Springhill Hospice are delighted to confirm the date for this year’s 10th Birthday Hospice to<br />
Hospice Walk. Sunday 24th of April will see hundreds of walkers set off from Broad Lane to<br />
walk the event’s 7.25 mile circular route, stopping off for a brew half way around at Dr<br />
Kershaw’s Hospice in Oldham.<br />
For the last 10 years supporters from both hospices have<br />
walked 7.25 miles raising money for their respective<br />
charities and bringing greater awareness of palliative care<br />
to the communities of Rochdale and Oldham.<br />
Last year 300 walkers supporting Springhill raised over<br />
£11,500, an amount that broke event fundraising<br />
records! This year, in celebration of 10 Years of the<br />
Hospice to Hospice Walk, Springhill are asking<br />
supporters in the communities of Rochdale, Middleton<br />
and <strong>Heywood</strong> to take on the Hospice to Hospice Walk<br />
challenge, hoping to celebrate in style and smash that<br />
record.<br />
“This event is a really relaxed, family orientated walk,<br />
everyone walks at their own pace. Individuals,<br />
families, groups of friends, work colleagues, dogs,<br />
prams and wheelchair bound supporters all really<br />
enjoy taking part. 7.25 miles is quite a distance but<br />
not too far to be daunting. People take part for so<br />
many reasons, whether it be to give something back<br />
to the Hospice or as a goal in their New Year fitness<br />
regime” said Springhill Hospice’s Community<br />
Fundraiser Lillie Winterbottom.<br />
“It’s fantastic not only to see all our supporters set off from Springhill but to welcome Dr Kershaw’s walkers to<br />
Springhill for cuppa. When our supporters return from Dr Kershaw’s they are met with a hot soup, a sit down and<br />
huge Springhill Smile. This year supporters will receive an added bonus as everyone who takes part will receive a<br />
special 10th Birthday edition commemorative medal” added Lillie<br />
Entry to this event costs just £7 and all money raised goes directly to caring for patients diagnosed with a life limiting<br />
illness. The walk starts in Springhill’s beautiful grounds at 10.30 am and finishes with hot soup and a sit down in<br />
the comfort of the Day Hospice.<br />

500g strong bread flour<br />
3 Teaspoons dried yeast<br />
3 Teaspoons salt<br />
375ml Water<br />
2 Tablespoon olive oil<br />
Extra flour for dusting<br />
2 Tablespoons Olive Oil<br />
2 Tablespoons Caster Sugar<br />
200g Marzipan<br />
Method<br />
1) Place the flour, yeast and salt in a mixer bowl with a dough<br />
hook, add the water and oil and put on a medium speed for<br />
approximately 5 minutes until the dough is well combined and<br />
kneaded.<br />
2) Place onto a lightly dusted work surface and knead for<br />
about 2 minutes until smooth. Place in a lightly oiled bowl,<br />
cover with a T towel and leave in a warm place for an hour to<br />
prove.<br />
3) After an hour tip back onto the work surface dusting with<br />
more flour to prevent it sticking and knock back. Divide into 6,<br />
knead each one briefly then place into lightly oiled round tins<br />
and place on a tray. Cover with a cloth and leave again for one<br />
hour until lightly risen.<br />
4) Remove the cloth and drizzle with olive oil. Bake in a hot<br />
oven at 180C for 8 minutes, open oven door then shower with<br />
sugar then return to the oven for a further 8 minutes.<br />
5) Remove from oven – leave to cool then garnish with<br />
marzipan and currants to resemble a rabbit.<br />

FRIENDS OF<br />
HOPWOOD PARK<br />
Summary<br />
The Friends of <strong>Hopwood</strong> Park (FOHP) formed in 2011 as a small group of residents to help make improvements<br />
to our local green space known as “<strong>Hopwood</strong> Rec”. Five years later we are a group of over 30 active volunteer members. We meet monthly to<br />
plan events and projects.<br />
Aims and objectives<br />
The aim of FOHP is to improve the facilities and safety of the recreation ground.<br />
Additional benefits have been improved social cohesion, reduction in anti-social<br />
behaviour and encourage residents of all ages to participate in community<br />
activities.<br />
WILDFLOWER MEADOW<br />
Since 2011, several successful funding bids have helped to improve play facilities<br />
for children, improve public access, and the creation of a wildflower meadow which<br />
has proved to be the parks most successful activity. All of this work has established<br />
the park as a focal point in the community.<br />
Annual Events and Activities<br />
Throughout the year FOHP organise a range of activities, events and projects to<br />
engage all the community – craft sessions, meadow maintenance events, family<br />
activities, a Winter Market and a large summer event. All fund raised at events<br />
are reinvested to further improve the park.<br />
SUMMER BAZAAR JUNE 2015<br />

In September 2015 with funds raised we purchased a refreshment cabin which is<br />
now situated on the park to provide snacks to park users. This is managed by<br />
FOHP volunteers will be open more<br />

Firstly, some good news re the business<br />
robberies in the town; we have charged four<br />
males with various robbery offences. There<br />
has been a dramatic reduction due to<br />
concerted work by the police in conjunction<br />
with partners, but I would warn against<br />
complacency. All businesses should still be vigilant.<br />
As per the advice re reducing burglaries to homes below, a<br />
significant number of the offences took place at premises where<br />
windows and doors were left open. You must secure windows and<br />
doors at all times.<br />
The attendance was low at the West <strong>Heywood</strong> Crime & Community<br />

CRIME PREVENTION ADVICE<br />
The number of Domestic Burglaries has increased in the<br />
past week. Below are some things you can do to reduce the<br />
risk of your property being broken in to:<br />
Operate several lamps on timer switches.<br />
You can get plug-in timers and timers that<br />
replace wall switches. There are also<br />
timers that sit on top of a wall switch<br />
that do not require wiring. Operate<br />
lamps in rooms they would normally<br />
occupy and ensure the on-off timing for<br />
the lights reflects their normal domestic<br />
routine.<br />
Use a Fake TV light, which is<br />
a small lamp that projects<br />
flickering and coloured<br />
light onto a window,<br />
which gives the<br />
impression of<br />
someone in the<br />
room watching TV.<br />
Vertical blinds, thick nets and drawn curtains can help mask<br />

Security mark your valuable property, preferably using<br />

Try to keep your garden tidy and always lock away any<br />
tools that could be used by the burglar to force open a door<br />
or window. Any shed, garage or other outbuilding must be<br />
properly secured. Valuable items in the garden, such as<br />
barbecues and furniture should be locked away when not in<br />
use and security marked.<br />

<strong>Heywood</strong> in Bloom Cheese & Wine<br />
event at Tilly’s Tea Room<br />
The first fundraiser for <strong>Heywood</strong> in Bloom was held at Tilly’s<br />
Tea Room on Friday 26th Feb and the event was a sell out.<br />
The evening included a raffle and a fun quiz which had<br />
everyone laughing and the quizmaster Dougy Grinrod proved<br />
to be very entertaining. The team of HIB are already making plans for the<br />
next event with tickets already sold…<br />
We would like to say thank you to Mike<br />
Goldrick owner of ‘Goldrick Blinds’ for<br />
providing our room and a lovely<br />
buffet served by his staff. We would<br />
also like to thank every one of the<br />
local businesses who donated gifts<br />
for our raffle which raised £179 on<br />
the night.<br />
The proceeds from the evening will<br />
help to pay for the flowers for this<br />
year’s hanging baskets and<br />
planters. The amount of support<br />
we have received has been<br />
overwhelming and we are<br />
continuing to add to our yearly<br />
displays. We have now been able to<br />
buy a pole to hold hanging baskets<br />
another tiered planter and 4 more<br />
saddle planters.<br />
Last year we brought back 12 awards<br />
for <strong>Heywood</strong> and the judges praised<br />
the town as a whole. If anyone<br />
