By Justin Peters As Antigua and Barbuda gears up for the 60 th Anniversary of Carnival, Nelson’s Dockyard parking lot was transformed into Carnival City this past Wednesday when the Antigua and Barbuda Festivals Commission made history by launching the Caribbean’s Greatest Summer Festival for the first time during the Antigua Sailing Week festivities in April. The national youth choir opened up the festivities with a lovely rendition of the national anthem of Antigua and Barbuda. The cultural dance that would follow was a fusion of color and movement that was too good to miss. Chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Festivals Commission welcomed one and all the come back in July to enjoy the full effect of Antigua’s Carnival. It wasn’t long before Emcee Sly the Chief Rocker J was delivering comedic tales of his youthful life experiences and how the Carnival culture shaped and molded him as a youngster. Calypso legends the Mighty King Swallow, the dynamic King Obstinate, and the melodic Calypso Joe graced the stage and the crowd went wild as they performed their “old-time” calypso as only the three musical giants could do it. Junior Calypso Champion baby eve showed off her musical prowess on the stage letting the world know that she was proudly following in the footsteps of her mother “Eve” who is also a noted female calypsonian. Pan master Ladoo Samuel delivered a sweet performance on an instrument that is indigenous to Antigua and Barbuda and widely used around the Caribbean and the reigning Miss Jaycees Caribbean queen, Miss Sharissa Ryan of Montserrat blew the crowd away with a musical rendition on her violin. As the show shifted into high gear, Mad-T-Guans, MNM Music, Junior Ram-
pler, Ricardo Drue and the Soca Diva, Claudette CP Peters who celebrated her 16 th year in the Soca business this year brought the “new” energy and the crowd gathered in the parking lot moved closer to the stage to jam into the next morning. Even the reigning Miss Antigua 2015, Ms. Asha Frank showed us just how much she could “wuk up” as Claudette Peters declared her a true Caribbean Queen. Fireworks provided the necessary intermission for the Original Burning Flames to set the stage for the rest of the night. As always they gave a memorable experience that surely left those in attendance wanting more Soca and more Carnival. But, we will all have to wait for July 27 th – August 2 nd , 2016 when Carnival City will appear once again at the Antigua Recreation Grounds and people from all over the world will come together in unison to enjoy the only Festival of its kind in the world.
