6 c a r i b b e a n t i m e s . a g Friday 29th April 2016 Liberta man gets six months at ‘1735’ Deborah A Parker Six months is the time a 32-year-old Liberta man will spend at Her Majesty’s prison for stealing from his mother. When he appeared before Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel in District B, Devin Gilead pleaded guilty to the offence of larceny, which was committed earlier this month. Gilead is said to have stolen US$100 from his mothe - An amount which his mother had carefully hid. Based on the evidence submitted by the Alecia Mc Pherson Jahbari Browne aged 22 of Green Bay was brought before Magistrate Wason yesterday at the District ‘A’ charged with dangerous driving and wearing clothing resembling the uniform worn by members of Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force. The prosecutor said that the mask was not there to be presented into evidence along with the other items as it had been sent for forensic analysis. The presiding magistrate ordered that Richardson pays a fine to the court of $7,000, but he begged to be given some time to come up with the money. For the unlawful possession of the uniform Richardson was convicted and fined $2,000 of which $1,000 is to be paid forthwith and the balance by May 16, 2016. For the charge of possession of a replica gun he was convicted and fined $5,000 of which $1,000 must be paid on July 16, 2016 and $1,000 every month thereafter, that is until November 16, 2016. In default of the payments Richardson would be sentenced to one year on each charge and the sentences will run concurrently. offender’s mother, it was out of frustration she made the report to the police. Youth appears in court for dangerous driving in the Green Bay area arrested Brown after he was seen approaching them from the opposite direction at high speed on Federation Road while driving vehicle A45048. Even as he narrowly avoided hitting a pedestrian, Browne reportedly showed no signs of slowing. The defendant was then signaled to pull over but in an attempt to evade the lawmen he sped past, in the process his vehicle came into harsh contact with the sidewalk and scarcely avoided collision with the police vehicle as the road is narrow. The officers were forced to turn around and give chase and minutes later caught up with the defendant who was observed wearing pants resembling the uniform of the ABDF. Browne was told that is an offence to wear such clothing without lawful authority, he was cautioned about his conduct and taken into police custody where he was given the mentioned charges. He was found guilty of unlawfully wearing the military type clothing. He was convicted and ordered to pay a fine of $1,000 by May 6, 2016. In default of this order he will be sentenced to thirty days at HMP. He pleaded not guilty to the charge of dangerous driving by speeding; this charge was dismissed against him. Two face charge of ammunition possession Alecia McPherson Roger Joseph aged 36 and Alester Crichton aged 47, both of whom resides together at Clare Hall, appeared before Chief Magistrates Jo-Anne Walsh yesterday at the District ‘A’ Court having been jointly charged with the unlawful possession of eleven rounds of .22 ammunition. On Tuesday April 26 of this week officers armed with a search warrant executed a search of the defendants’ premises in search of unlicensed firearm, ammunition and controlled drugs. During the search a transparent plastic bag containing ammunition was found in a vase on the living room table. Both defendants were questioned about the discovery and asked what it was, Joseph reportedly responded “I don’t know, I don’t know who put that there”. The question of whether either of them owns a firearm licence was also posed to the defendants to which Joseph reportedly answered “Officer me na have no gun”. Both men were arrested and taken into custody and were subsequently given the mentioned charged. The ammunition counted to be 11 .22 caliber rounds. Joseph pleaded guilty to the charge; he was convicted and fined $2,500 to be paid forthwith. In default of this payment he will be sentenced to one year at HMP. Crichton pleaded not guilty and the charge was withdrawn against him
Friday 29th April 2016 c a r i b b e a n t i m e s . a g 7 Digicel Halcyon Steel Orchestra celebrates its 45 th Anniversay On Thursday 5 th May, 2016 the Digicel Halcyon Steel Orchestra will be Forty Five years old. In observance of this significant milestone, the band will be staging a number of events throughout the year under the theme Halcyon Steel at 45; soaring to the next level. These events will be held in several phases, the first of which will be held from April 29, 2016 to May 08, 2016. The following activities will constitute phase (1) of the celebrations:- Appearance on ZDK Radio Friday April 29, 2016 3:00 to 4:00PM Appearance on Crusader Radio Saturday 30 th April Appearance on Observer Radio Sunday May 01, 2016 4:00PM Performance at Digicel Market Street office Thursday May 05, 2016 (Anniversary Day) Performance at Sir VC Bird Bust Saturday May 07, 2016 (12:00PM -1:00PM) to be carried live on Sun FM 45 th Anniversary Church Service at the Green Bay Moravian Church, on Sunday 8 th May, starting at 9:00AM The celebration activities for the remaining phases will be announced shortly. The Band’s 45 th anniversary coincides with two other significant milestones that are being observed in Antigua/Barbuda in 2016, the 60 th year of carnival and the 10 th anniversary of its sponsors, DIGICEL in Antigua. Halcyon Steel Orchestra which has its roots in the Grays Green Community was founded on May 05, 1971 by then Parliamentary Representative for the area, Mr. Selvyn Walter. Mr. Walter’s desire to form the band was in keeping with a campaign promise he made to trigger the resurgence of the steel band movement within the community following the demise of the West Side Serenaders and Red Army. Some of his early lieutenants who assisted him included Penrod and Samuel Kirby, Melvin Simon, and James Tanny Rose. Since then the band has achieved several accomplishments and is widely regarded as one of the leaders of the musical art form in Antigua and Barbuda and indeed the Caribbean. Some of its major accomplishments to date include: Ten (10) times National Panorama Champs including the historic four (4 )Peat 1992- 1995 Four (4) time winners of the Gemonites 25 a side pan competition – 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015 Several times winners of “Sweetest Sounding” steelband on the road during Carnival. The only steelband to date to have accompanied a calypsonian in Antigua’s Calypso Monarch Final over the past fifty (50) years; the Mighty Wizard – Mr. Pan Man 1982 Performed before audiences in Germany, Demark, London, Baltimore Maryland, Miami Florida, St. Thomas U.S.V.I and several other Caribbean islands Producer of a pan album widely regarded amongst the best in Antigua/Barbuda; “Pan In Harmony” 1976 (40 th anniversary since its production) The Band would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to all those persons and organizations who have contributed to its success over the past forty (45) years. These include the many players, arrangers, pan tuners, fans and sponsors. Halcyon Steel is eternally grateful for your efforts in making the Band a true Antiguan success story. We will continue to strive for excellence and keep on soaring as we aim to take pan to the level. After all, the sky is the limit.
