Inter-school basketball<br />

championships end on a high note<br />

The <strong>2016</strong> Cool & Smooth<br />

Interschool Basketball<br />

Championships ended on<br />

a high note on Wednesday<br />

as youngsters in all categories<br />

were rewarded for their<br />

outstanding performances<br />

during the league and playoffs.<br />

Princess Margaret edged<br />

out defending champions,<br />

Antigua Girls High, 26-23 to<br />

hoist the Girls Playoff championship.<br />

Along with that hardware,<br />

Britnay Gore was named the<br />

Most Valuable Player of the<br />

playoffs scoring 20 points<br />

that day.<br />

Antigua Girls high did<br />

not go home empty handed.<br />

They were awarded their first<br />

place trophy for the League,<br />

second for the playoffs and<br />

key player, Shakea Ogarro<br />

was named the MVP for the<br />

league and Female Player<br />

of the year for the second<br />

straight time year.<br />

Clare Hall Secondary was<br />

crowned the Miniboys Secondary<br />

playoff champions<br />

after defeating St. Joseph’s<br />

Academy in a nail biter, 19-<br />

18.<br />

Javonte Daley was named<br />

the MVP of the playoffs.<br />

Despite the upsetting defeat,<br />

SJA still had much to<br />

smile about as they crowned<br />

the league champions with<br />

Jaden Andrew being named<br />

the Most Valuable Player.<br />

In the Senior boys category,<br />

Antigua State College<br />

cleaned up shop winning<br />

both the league and playoff<br />

championships after<br />

sweeping Antigua Grammar<br />

School, 50-40 also on<br />

Wednesday.<br />

Dawny Francis was<br />

named the MVP for both the<br />

league and playoffs with a<br />

16 point to sweep Antigua<br />

Grammar school.<br />

AGS,along with their<br />

second place finish in the seniors<br />

boys division dominated<br />

the junior boys category<br />

winning both the league and<br />

playoff championships with<br />

Anthony Greer being named<br />

the Most Valuable Player for<br />

both the league and playoffs<br />

and also being judged the<br />

Male Player of the year for<br />

the second straight year.<br />

In the Miniboys Primary<br />

division, Greenbay Primary<br />

were crowned the league<br />

champions with Shakiel<br />

Matthew named the MVP.<br />

Buckleys Primary placed<br />

Antigua Barbuda have recorded another<br />

victory in the Leeward Islands Cricket<br />

Board 50 overs championships on Wednesday.<br />

Facing the U.S. Virgin Islands at Sandy<br />

Point in St. Kitts, team Wadadli dismissed<br />

them with a 45 run victory.<br />

Opting to bat first, Antigua Barbuda<br />

made 82 all out in 26.1 overs with Damian<br />

Lowenfield making 14 runs.<br />

second and T. N . Kirnon<br />

third.<br />

Other awards were given<br />

out that day, the Coach<br />

of the year went to Edward<br />

Shaw for the second consecutive<br />

year. Shaw, coaches<br />

both the Antigua Girls High<br />

school and Antogua Grammar<br />

school who dominated<br />

the program in their respective<br />

divisions.<br />

Clare hall secondary<br />

placed second in the Miniboys<br />

Secondary category<br />

for the league with Antigua<br />

Grammar coming third.<br />

In the Junior boys division,<br />

Jennings Secomdary<br />

was awarded second place<br />

and SJA, third while in the<br />

girls category, Princess Margaret<br />

finished second and<br />

Christ the King High, third.<br />

AGS claimed the silver<br />

in the Senior boys category<br />

while Ottos Comprehensive<br />

finished third.<br />

When asked about how<br />

he felt about the program’s<br />

succes this year, School’s<br />

coordinator, Carl ‘Bowlie’<br />

Knight had this to say.<br />

‘I am truly happy not<br />

only for the outstanding performances<br />

we saw from the<br />

youngsters but for the growth<br />

in each category, especially<br />

from the country teams.<br />

I could not be more<br />

pleased but I would especially<br />

want to thank my coaches<br />

for their hard work and also<br />

to our main sponsor, Cool &<br />

Smooth who has been with<br />

us for a number of years.<br />

I also would like to give<br />

a special thank you to Dion<br />

Shaw who also supports us<br />

for a number of years in gifts<br />

or monetary prizes. In fact,<br />

both the male and female<br />

player of the year received<br />

a monetary prize from Mr.<br />

Shaw and we just want to<br />

thank him.<br />

The future for Antigua<br />

basketball is truly bright we<br />

just have to continue to guide<br />

and support’.<br />

Another victory for Antigua and Barbuda<br />

Dane ‘Bangado’ Weston and Larry Joseph<br />

of the USVI took two wickets each.<br />

USVI struggled and were 37 all out in<br />

27.4 overs with the top batsman being Larry<br />

Joseph with 9 runs.<br />

Rahkeem ‘Jimbo’ Cornwall, Hayden<br />

Walsh Jr.and Alzarri Joseph all took two<br />

wickets.<br />

Team Wadadli will wrap up their campaign<br />

as they face St. Maarten on Sunday<br />

at Warner Park.
