Seniour educators receive leadership<br />
training in two-day workshop<br />

Principals of public primary and secondary<br />
schools and technical officers<br />
within the Ministry of Education, Science<br />
and Technology are engaged in a<br />
two day workshop, taking place at the<br />
Grand Royal Antiguan Resort.<br />
The training which began on Thursday<br />
is focused on building the leadership<br />
capacity of school leaders.<br />
Speaking during the brief opening<br />
ceremony, Director of Education, Clare<br />
Browne, outlined the significance of the<br />
workshop.<br />
He indicated that the education system<br />
must develop creative, productive<br />
and adaptable men and women as well<br />
as identify, cultivate and nurture as fully<br />
as possible, each child’s capacity, attitude<br />
and strength.<br />

schools, $10 million dollars<br />
has been allocated to build<br />
new classrooms.<br />
The decision was made<br />
during Cabinet’s meeting this<br />
week.<br />
Government’s Chief of<br />
Staff, Lionel “Max” Hurst,<br />
said that a group comprising<br />
five principals, the Director<br />
of Education, Clare Browne,<br />
and the Permanent Secretary<br />
within the Ministry of Education,<br />
Science and Technology<br />
and other senior education<br />
officers gave Cabinet an update<br />
on the current situation.<br />
It was expressed that the<br />
adequate and responsive to the constantly<br />
changing labour market, migration, technological<br />
advances and other needs of<br />
the 21 st century, if our children and young<br />
people are to be given even the slimmest<br />
chance of survival in tomorrow’s world,<br />
then our education officers, principals<br />
and teachers must constantly seek to<br />
build capacity to serve our clients well”,<br />
explained the well spoken Browne.<br />
Browne under underscored that training<br />
for education officers should include<br />
a focus on the practice of leadership and<br />
the development of approaches and practices<br />
that build leadership in others with<br />
the growth of systematic improvement.<br />
He further emphasized that a school<br />
leadership has an impact in the overall<br />
output of students across the board.<br />
The Director of Education said that<br />
the training will provide the participants<br />
<strong>issue</strong> is most prominent in the<br />
secondary schools located in<br />
St. John’s, primarily the Antigua<br />
Girls High School, the<br />
Princess Margaret Secondary<br />
School and the Antigua<br />
Grammar School.<br />

institutions have been<br />
placed under a lot of pressure<br />
The Department of Youth Affairs will be<br />
hosting a free literacy training programme in<br />
an effort to improve the literacy skills of primary<br />
and secondary school students in Antigua<br />
and Barbuda.<br />
This programme is geared towards primary<br />
school students from Grades 4-6 and secondary<br />
school students from forms 3-5. The literacy<br />
programme run from 18 th – 29 th July for primary<br />
school students and 8 th – 19 th August for<br />
with regards to enrollment.<br />
He explained that Cabinet<br />
considered a method to satisfy<br />
the demand.<br />
“We are going to construct<br />
new classrooms on the<br />
campuses and in two weeks,<br />
the group will return and are<br />
expected to present a plan<br />
and an outline as to where the<br />
with an opportunity to examine the skills<br />
that are needed to be successful leaders.<br />
The workshop is being facilitated by<br />
Dr. Maurice Smith, Jamaica’s Permanent<br />
Secretary within the Ministry of Education,<br />
Youth and Information.<br />
He indicated that throughout the two<br />
day forum, emphasis will be placed on<br />
highlighting strengths and improving<br />
weak areas where leadership is concerned.<br />
“We are going to learn about ourselves,<br />
learn about our teams, learn about<br />
our schools, it is all about leadership<br />
and we are going to build a foundation”,<br />
Smith declared.<br />
The workshop forms part of the efforts<br />
of the Ministry of Education, Science<br />
and Technology to develop a cadre<br />
of well trained and effective educators in<br />
the twin island state.<br />

about space with some<br />
schools being forced to convert<br />
their auditoriums into<br />
classrooms in order to adequately<br />
accommodate students.<br />

the Department of Youth Affairs Headquarters<br />
on Prime Minister’s Office Drive (off Factory<br />
