The Emboriko Centre
The social heart of Corfu Town can be found at the Emboriko
Centre where most of the major nightclubs, bars and restaurants
are clustered
together along what
has become known
as Disco Strip. The
Centre is situated
on the coastal road
out of town that
runs past the New
Port. Night life is
hectic here but it is
also a fine place to
enjoy a good meal
or drink anytime of the day or night. Good views too in daytime
of the mainland mountains and the coast up to Nissaki.
Bakeries
Corfu is fortunate to have many extremely good bakers - and to
have some of the best bread in Greece! There are many different
types of bread to try including oktospora (made with 8 different
types of seeds) and kolokithi (made with pumpkin seed). Look out
to for the traditional tyropitas - pitas made usually of fillo pastry
and feta cheese. There ara a number of different types including
kourou made with crust pastry but the fillo one is the basic.
Another popular favourite is the spanakopita - a pita containing
spinach and cheese, usually feta but other cheese may be used for
variation. Both tyropitas and spanakopitas come in small sizes and
as slices of a large pie made in a pan. In recent years many
traditional bakery items have become popular again and each
region in the Ionian and Epirus has its own specialities.
For a range of delicious pies, try Dovoras, 1 Michael Theotoki
Street, Corfu Town. Tel; 26610 22119. They're open from early in
the morning till late.
EATING OUT - CIBO E BEVANDE
There are a number of different ways to sample Greek cuisine.
At the luxurious end there are restaurants (estiatoria) which
usually offer a full Greek menu including meat, fish and
traditional Greek dishes like papoutsakia (stuffed aubergines), mousaka
(minced meat, aubergine & bechamel sauce), calamaria (squid). Some
restaurants will also offer a range of desserts.
Then there are the tavernas which cater for specific kinds of food.
Psistaria for example, serve grilled meat including goat, lamb and a
range of succulent delicacies such as kokoretsi, spleena or sikoti
(intestines, spleen and liver). Psarotavernas (fish tavernas) serve fresh
fish exclusively. The term ‘taverna’ covers a range of eating
establishments from those that offer an extensive variety of traditional
meat and fish dishes such as sofrito (veal in garlic sauce ) or calamaria
for example to those that have a set menu, usually oven roasted or baked
dishes like stifado (veal and onion stew) which vary from day to day.
If you want to sample Greek hors d’oeuvres or mezes you can visit a
mezedopolion or ouzerie where you will be presented with a range of
appetizers including octopus, spicy sausages, pies, fried peppers,
aubergines and meat balls (keftedakia) and a range of salads and dips
including aubergine salad, taramasalata (made from fish roe) and tzatziki
(made from yoghurt, garlic & cucumber).
Greeks seldom eat dessert after their meals, perhaps some fruit at the
most. Eating cakes & pastries is usually a separate event when you may
go to a zacharoplastio (pastry shop) where you will find most of the
classic Greek sweets - cataïfi, baklava etc. If you get hungry during the
day or if you want breakfast try a galaktopolio where you will find fresh
milk, fresh rolls, yoghurt and honey.
Kafenions offer coffee, aperitifs and other drinks and you may play
games like backgammon (tavli).
Finally, it’s worth remembering that the normal Greek diet is one of the
healthiest in Europe.
Lots of fresh and seasonal fruit, fish, salad and vegetables; local meat is
invariably very fresh; lemon juice is squeezed over most dishes to
neutralize oils and fats and, of course, olives and olive oil are liberally
used.
Most important perhaps is the Greek
attitude to eating. Greeks consider eating
to be a central part of their lives, and they
take time to enjoy their meals. They also
drink in moderation and often only at
mealtimes. All of which should encourage
you to sample Greek cooking whenever
you can. Kali orexi - good appetite.
Ci sono innumerevoli modi di
avvicinarsi all'autentica cucina
greca.
oltre a tante specialità, come kokoretsi, splina e sikoti (rispettivamente
intestini, milza e fegato) Le psarotavernes (taverne di pesce) servono
esclusivamente pesce fresco.
stifado (vitello e cipolle stufati).
Dolci e paste vengono in genere gustati in momenti
