38 THE NORTH EAST COAST - COSTA NORD-EST - O-KÜSTE NACH NORDEN Famous sites on the East Coast Kouloura and Kalami are justly famous and the views of Albania from here to Kassiopi are spectacular. This is sometimes referred to as Durrell Country - the family once lived in Kalami in the white house on the beach. Kouloura is a small fishing village best viewed from above. It is one of the most famous of all views of Corfu. You might like to get off the beaten track and visit the beautiful bays around Agni (after Nissaki) or Agni Bay San Stefanos (just before Kassiopi); the latter is barely 3 klms. from Albania. Higher up on the slopes of the mountains behind Kalami you can find untouched old villages with old stone houses.Life up here has remained pretty much untouched. Wenn Sie mal etwas mehr als das Übliche wollen, dann sehen Sie sich die bezaubernden Buchten von Agni (hinter Nissaki) oder Ag. Stefanos (knapp vor Kassiopi)an - letzteres ist kaum 3 km von Albanien entfernt. Kouloura The view from Kassiopi Castle KASSIOPI In Roman times this was the first landfall in Greece from Italy and has seen many famous visitors including Cicero, Mark Anthony and the Emperor Nero. The Romans built a castle on the heights above the town which was demolished and then rebuilt by the Venetians to protect the village from pirate and Turkish raids. Not much is left of the fort but it can be explored with determination and good shoes. Look out for the old Venetian Church near the harbour and the old cannons rescued from a sunken galleon - these are proudly displayed today across from the majestic old plane tree that dominates the harbour square. Kassiopi has retained its character as a fishing village and a holiday there allows you to enjoy the traditional way of life with modern comforts. There are many good beaches and it is ideal for walks and pony trekking. Across from the village you can see Saranda in Albania and late in the season you may see snow on the mountains in the distance. Kassiopi: Ai tempi dei romani, era il primo porto greco che s'incontrava venendo dall'Italia ed ebbe molti visitatori famosi, compresi Cicerone, Marco Antonio e l'imperatore Nerone. Il castello, che i romani costruirono sulle alture sovrastanti la cittadina, fu demolito e in seguito ricostruito dai veneziani per proteggere la popolazione dalle incursioni dei pirati e dei turchi. Di esso non rimane più molto, ma, con un po' di buona volontà ed un paio di scarpe comode, si puo tentare di andare alla sua scoperta. Vicino al porto, cercate la chiesa veneziana e i vecchi cannoni. Essi furono recuperati da un galeone naufragato nelle vicinanze e sono, ora, messi in bella mostra ai lati del maestoso platano che domina la piazza del porto. Kassiopi ha anche varie belle spiagge ed è l'ideale per passeggiate e trekking. Kassiopi: Dieser beliebte Urlaubsort liegt 36 km von Korfu- Stadt an der Einfahrt in den Korfu-Kanal. In römischer Zeit war K. die erste Anlaufstelle in Griechenland auf der Route von Italien. Berühmtheiten wie Cicero, Antonius und Kaiser Nero (unterwegs zu den Olympischen Spielen) sind nachweislich hier gewesen. Die römische Festung auf den Höhen oberhalb der Stadt wurde nach Zerstörung von den Venetianern als Schutz gegen Piraten- und Türkeneinfälle wiederaufgebaut. Von der Burg steht nicht mehr viel, das aber läßt sich mit einiger Entschlossenheit und gutem Schuhwerk erkunden. Beachten Sie auch die alte venezianische Kirche in der Nähe des Hafens sowie die aus einer gesunkenen Galeone geretteten Kanonen, die heute so stolz gegenüber der alten Platane am Hafenplatz ausgebreitet liegen. ACHARAVI & RODA The road across the northern coast from Kassiopi takes you first past the fine bays of Imerolia, Kalamaki and Apraos. Look out for the lake and beach at Ag. Spiridon which is just after the turnoff to Perithia. From Perithia you can get up to Mount Pandocrator and there are caves near to the village in the foothills. Alimos beach just before Acharavi is long and sandy. Acharavi has one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in the north. It is now a major resort and has extensive tourist facilities and a vibrant night life. There is a Roman bath on the outskirts. Roda a little further along is another popular tourist resort and it has a number of ancient Greek and Roman sites. Beyond Roda en route to Sidari you come to the picturesque old village of Karoussades in the hills above the lovely beach at Astrakeri. La strada che risale la costa settentrionale dell'isola passa prima da Kalamaki & Apraos, e poi da Perithia, dalla quale si puo salire verso il Pantokratoras. Nei pressi di questo villaggio, sulle pendici della montagna ci sono delle grotte. Dopo Perithia, cercate il lago e la spiaggia di Aghios Spiridon (S.Spiridione). Acharavi ha una lunga spiaggia sabbiosa e i suoi impianti ricettivi sono di vario genere. Offre, inoltre, un'intensa vita notturna. Roda, il villaggio successivo, è un'altra nota località balneare e vi si trovano rovine risalenti all'antichità greca e romana, tra cui quelle di un piccolo tempio, vicino al litorale. Superata Roda, sulla strada per Sidari, si giunge al vecchio villaggio di Karoussades, sulle colline sovrastanti la deliziosa baia di Astrakeri. The Monastery at Ag. Ioannis Karoussades There is a small walled monastery near to the camping at Ag. Ioannis Karoussades which is worth walking up to. It has lovely views all around and a fine door and bell tower. Ag Ioannis has a long sandy beach. 39
